Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Matthew Gomez

Matthew Gomez shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Matthew, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
My cinematic universe. I have a lot of shows, movies, and short films that I am constantly creating. Budget is really the only thing stopping me from creating these stories into live action or animated. But in the mean time I have just been writing the screenplays, creating power-sytems, the world, and characters, Even a dedicated timeline of events starting from the creation of the universe all the way to the present. It runs really deep and I can’t wait for the world to meet all my characters, and i’m also excited to meet the characters I haven’t met yet too.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Matthew Gomez & i’m a 24 year old Writer/Director from Buena Park, CA. For work, I am a professional video editor, having worked with various social media influencers and ad agencies. I’m currently working on becoming a a full time writer/director, and my latest project I just made was a short horror film disguised as a regular YouTube video. I plan on building an audience online to eventually switch to become a content creator as my full time job.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
What breaks bonds between people is pride. Pride is the sin that closes your heart from understanding other people. The arrogance that it breeds creates an idea in a person’s head that they are superior, and therefore, if you disagree with me, you are wrong. This pride creates walls, builds enemies, and closes us off from understanding one another.

One of the themes I want to show through my work is that love, open-mindedness, and objectivity are the key to restoring and keeping bonds among people. I believe that in any of your relationships, if both people genuinely approach a situation, argument, or conflict with love, it will work out 100% of the time.

Open-mindedness and objectivity go hand in hand. You need the ability to be open to everything and anything to allow someone to speak freely and to allow yourself to understand them. When someone opens up to you, your emotions should be removed and you focus solely on them.

Objectivity is the key to logically assessing a situation and how to proceed forward. Everyone’s feelings are valid because it’s how they feel. At the same time, the facts of the situation or conflict need to be taken into consideration in order to solve it correctly.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
Video games were my go-to for sure haha. Shoutout to my boy Link. I’m a huge Nintendo nerd, Zelda, Pokémon, Mario, Smash Bros, I love it all. I don’t really recall being too sad when I was a kid, but I was pretty scared. I imagined myself as Link (from Ocarina of Time). He was a kid just like me, and we looked pretty much identical. But he went from being a normal kid to having to save the world, and that’s something that inspired me a lot, and he still does. In moments of sadness now I go and play video games, and it brings me back to my roots and really connects me to my childhood self.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Making Writing/Directing my career and being the best at it.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I mean that’s how it’s been up to this point, so yes haha. I rarely get praised, but truthfully it’s not something that I need to perform at my best. Obviously, in my career, the audience and numbers matter for me to be successful, so I’m sure at one point I will receive it. But as of now, I’m used to not having it, and I still give my all without question.
