Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Dana Gaydon

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dana Gaydon. Check out our conversation below.

Dana, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
For a long time, I struggled with imposter syndrome and a deep fear of rejection. But through years of emotional work—and more recently, a powerful hypnosis session—I finally released those fears. I’m in a place now where I can truly show up without holding back. Because I’ve done that inner work, I’m able to help my clients do the same: to access their own superpower by showing up fully and authentically in front of the camera—the incredible power of being your true self. That’s where the magic is.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Dana Gaydon — a brand and lifestyle photographer, creative director, and founder of Modern Joy Studio, where color, personality, and storytelling come together to create vibrant visual experiences.

For over 20 years, I’ve been helping entrepreneurs, creatives, and brands show up as their most authentic selves through imagery that feels joyful, confident, and deeply personal. My background blends photography, design, and an obsession with color psychology and personality frameworks like the Enneagram and Human Design — which means every shoot I do is rooted in self-expression and emotional connection.

What makes my work unique is that I see photography as more than just beautiful pictures — it’s a transformational process. I’ve done a lot of inner work myself to overcome my fears of being seen. Now, I bring that same energy to my sessions, helping my clients access their confidence and personal power in front of the camera.

Right now, I’m expanding Modern Joy Studio with new creative partnerships, colorful commercial campaigns, and digital offerings that help people bring more joy and self-love into their brands and lives. My mission is simple: to help people see themselves the way the world already does — as magnetic, powerful, and one-of-a-kind.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I think what breaks the bonds between people most often is fear: fear of not being enough, fear of being misunderstood, or fear of being rejected. When we start protecting ourselves from those fears, we build walls instead of bridges. We stop showing our full selves, and connection can’t survive where authenticity is hidden.

What restores those bonds is presence and vulnerability. When we’re willing to show up as we are, very imperfect, human, and open we give others permission to do the same. That’s the magic that happens in front of the camera, too. When a client lets go of who they think they should be and steps into who they really are, something powerful shifts. That’s where real connection happens, both with themselves and with the people who will see their images.

I believe love (especially connected to spirituality), honesty, and self-acceptance are what repair what fear breaks.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self: Rejection isn’t a reflection of your worth, it’s redirection toward where your energy truly belongs. The people and opportunities meant for you will never require you to shrink or prove yourself. Every “no” is actually clearing space for a deeper, more aligned “yes.” Trust that who you are is already enough and that the right people will see you without you having to convince them. Rejection is after all a projection of the other person.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My friends would probably say that what truly matters to me is authentic connection with people, creativity, and purpose. They know I’m deeply curious about what makes each person unique, and that I love exploring tools like astrology, the Enneagram, and Human Design to help people understand themselves on a deeper level.

They’d tell you I care about helping others feel seen, loved, and confident in their own skin. I find beauty in color, emotion, and meaning, and I light up when someone begins to recognize their own magic. More than anything, they’d say I lead with joy, empathy, and heart, and that helping people express their truest selves whether through photos or conversation is what matters most to me.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I think I deeply understand the connection between self-expression and self-worth and how showing up as your true self isn’t just about confidence, it’s about healing. A lot of people see photography as something external, about how they look. But I see it as an inner experience, a mirror that reflects how we feel about ourselves. And also a portal into our higher self.

I understand that transformation doesn’t happen when someone tells you to “just be confident.” It happens when you feel safe enough to be seen. That’s where my work lives. I love creating spaces where people can drop the mask, reconnect with what they love about themselves, and remember that being real is the most magnetic thing there is.
