Hi Sandy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began my career in banking, working in mortgage loans for about eight years. It was a stable job, and I was always busy, but I found myself counting down the hours each day, waiting for 5 p.m. to roll around. I knew something was missing. That all changed when I discovered permanent makeup and started doing brows. From the moment I picked up my tools, it no longer felt like work—I had finally found my passion.

The journey to making PMU my full-time career wasn’t easy. For nearly three years, I worked seven days a week. I’d spend five days at the bank and use my weekends to build my PMU business. There were even days when, after finishing an eight-hour shift at the bank, I’d head straight to the studio to work on my clients. It was exhausting, but I knew I was building toward something bigger.

After three years of hard work and dedication, I finally built a steady clientele. That’s when I took a leap of faith and committed to PMU full-time. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right one. Looking back, I’m proud of the journey and grateful that I followed my passion. What started as a side hustle has now become a fulfilling career where I get to help people feel more confident and beautiful every day.

After four years of building my business, I achieved one of my biggest dreams—I opened my own storefront in Covina, CA. I never thought I’d be able to reach that milestone, but through hard work, determination, and a deep love for what I do, I made it happen. Opening my own studio has been one of the most rewarding moments of my journey, and it’s a reminder that when you’re passionate and push through the challenges, you can achieve more than you ever imagined.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey hasn’t been without its challenges. When I first started, I had no clients and no experience, so it truly felt like building from the ground up. I invested in many in-person training courses to improve my skills. While the trainers were helpful, I didn’t always see the progress I hoped for, which made growth more difficult.

I also didn’t have many people to turn to for guidance, which added to the challenges. Renting small spaces at high costs without enough income to cover them was tough. At one point, I was even in a studio where the environment made it hard to continue in the industry.

There were definitely moments of frustration, and giving up crossed my mind more than once. But I knew I had invested too much and was too passionate to quit. Then came the additional hurdle of navigating through a global pandemic, which didn’t make things easier.

Today, I’m in a much better place. I’ve found an incredible group of supportive individuals, and having that kind of community has been invaluable. Because of that experience, I’m committed to being a resource for my own students, ensuring they never feel as isolated as I once did. I’m proud of the journey and grateful for where I’ve arrived.

Something surprising that most people might not know about me is that I started my career in banking, working in mortgage loans for about eight years. Although it was a secure job and kept me busy, I found my true passion when I began working in permanent makeup. The shift from finance to beauty was significant; I went from constantly looking at the clock to counting down the minutes until I could dive back into my artistry. This background in finance has actually helped me understand the business side of my current work, allowing me to better manage my studio and support my students as they start their own journeys in the industry.
