Inspiring Conversations with Rajiv Joshi of Mind What Matters Family Therapy Corporation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rajiv Joshi.

Hi Rajiv, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age, I was fascinated by psychology and drawn to understanding people’s inner worlds. I’ve always had a deep appreciation for supporting those in need and helping them find meaning and connection in their lives.

Initially, I planned to become a psychiatrist, but as I moved through my academic journey, I realized I was more interested in understanding people’s stories rather than focusing solely on symptoms. That insight led me toward a path in psychotherapy — one rooted in connection, growth, and empowerment.

I began working at the UCI Child Development School, where I supported students and families in building stronger home-school connections. That experience helped me see how meaningful change happens when individuals and families feel seen, supported, and understood.

From there, I transitioned into community-based mental health to deepen my work with diverse populations and better understand the systemic challenges people face. Each role reinforced my belief that healing isn’t one-size-fits-all — it’s a journey that looks different for everyone.

Owning my own private practice has always been a dream — one that began in 2016. In October 2024, I officially opened Mind What Matters Family Therapy, a space built around helping clients grow at their own pace, in a way that works best for them. It’s been a full-circle moment — turning years of vision, persistence, and heart into something tangible that now serves the community I care deeply about.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has definitely not been smooth, but it’s one I’ve deeply appreciated every step of the way.

I started in behavioral health, working in classrooms with children and learning how to build genuine connections with both kids and families. It was incredibly meaningful work, but also emotionally demanding — often in settings that were underserved and under-resourced. Those early years taught me resilience, empathy, and the value of presence.

When I transitioned into community mental health, I quickly realized how much red tape and systemic barriers can stand in the way of providing effective support for families who need it most. It was challenging to navigate those limitations while wanting so much to help. On top of that, learning to separate work from personal life was a lesson in itself; the emotional weight of the work can easily follow you home.

Despite all of that, I wouldn’t change the journey for anything. Each challenge shaped me into the therapist I am today. I learned how to connect with families going through some of the hardest moments of their lives, how to think creatively in my interventions, and how to maintain balance — showing up fully for my clients while also being present for my own loved ones.

As you know, we’re big fans of Mind What Matters Family Therapy Corporation . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Mind What Matters Family Therapy is a practice built on collaboration, authenticity, and growth. Our mission is to support clients in becoming the best versions of themselves — not by telling them who to be, but by helping them discover their own path forward.

We specialize in treating ADHD, anxiety, depression, and life transitions, using evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Our work is grounded in science, but guided by compassion.

What sets us apart is our commitment to genuine collaboration. We’re not the therapists who simply nod and agree — we’re active participants in our clients’ journeys. We ask thoughtful questions, challenge unhelpful patterns, and empower clients to build insight and resilience. Therapy with us is a space where clients are seen, supported, and encouraged to grow at their own pace.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Mind What Matters stands for quality and integrity. We focus on creating a meaningful therapeutic experience — one that’s not about quick fixes or surface-level advice, but about real transformation. Every client deserves care that feels personalized, intentional, and grounded in evidence-based practice.

At the end of the day, our goal is simple: to help people live fuller, more connected, and purpose-driven lives — because their mental health truly matters.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has definitely played a role in my journey through the mentors and people I’ve met along the way. I’ve been fortunate to cross paths with individuals who genuinely cared about both the work and the people behind it.

One of my earliest mentors was Dave Agler at the UCI Child Development School, who modeled what it truly means to care for students’ well-being while maintaining clear and healthy boundaries. That experience shaped how I show up for clients and balance compassion with professionalism.

Later, by complete chance, I met Michael Uram through a friend — and that meeting changed the course of my career. Michael gave me my first opportunity as an Associate MFT at Uram Family Therapy (shoutout to UFT!). He not only taught me the ins and outs of private practice but also demonstrated what it means to run a business with heart and integrity. He remains a close friend and colleague to this day.

I’ve also been incredibly lucky in my personal life. My wife, Beatrice, has been my biggest supporter and advocate — the one who encouraged me to take the leap from county mental health into private practice. Her belief in me gave me the courage to pursue my vision and build something of my own. I can confidently say I wouldn’t be here without her and all her love and support.

Having such positive mentors and supportive relationships along my journey has been one of the greatest blessings. I’ve also been lucky to meet community resource providers and colleagues who are just as passionate about serving others. Those connections remind me that luck isn’t always random — sometimes it’s the people who cross your path at just the right time who change everything.
