Today we’d like to introduce you to Mohammad Odah
Hi Mohammad, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From Engineering to Art Dealing: A Journey of Passion and Resilience
In a world driven by technology and innovation, I began my career as a technical engineer, charting my path through esteemed companies like Microsoft. My journey was not just marked by professional milestones, but also by the unwavering support of my mother, who inspired me at every turn. Her belief in my potential fueled my ambition and encouraged me to dream big.
With a wealth of experience gained from collaborating with high-profile individuals and organizations, I took a bold step toward entrepreneurship by establishing my own consultancy specializing in technology and marketing. However, the journey was not without its challenges. A misjudged partnership led to the unfortunate downfall of my company, forcing me to reevaluate my direction.
In the wake of this setback, I sought solace and reinvention in a new venture. I joined forces with a prominent social figure who shared a profound passion for the arts. Together, we founded a small institution that allowed me to leverage my managerial expertise and creative vision. Through dedication and hard work, our collaboration blossomed into a diverse group of businesses, each thriving in its own right.
Among the most transformative aspects of this new chapter was the establishment of an art gallery dedicated to curating contemporary visual arts and managing the careers of talented artists. This experience ignited a newfound passion within me, prompting me to pursue courses and connect with leading art collectors. I traveled the globe, immersing myself in the beauty of artistic expression within museums and forging relationships with artists who inspired me.
Driven by this passion, I embarked on a new role as an art dealer, representing artists and enhancing their experiences. I became an intermediary, acquiring and marketing exquisite artworks to esteemed collectors and institutions. My Instagram account grew into a platform where prominent collectors sought my recommendations, eagerly anticipating my insights on emerging talents and exceptional pieces.
Today, I stand at the intersection of technology and art, where my journey has taken me from the precision of engineering to the vibrant world of creative expression. This evolution has not only shaped my professional identity but has also deepened my appreciation for the transformative power of art. My story is a testament to resilience, the importance of mentorship, and the pursuit of passion, reminding us that sometimes, the most unexpected paths lead to the most fulfilling destinations.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No path in the business world is ever straightforward, and my journey has been no exception. The challenges I faced were numerous and often daunting, but each one taught me invaluable lessons and shaped my perspective on resilience and adaptability.
One of the most significant hurdles was the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely impacted cash flow across various sectors, including the art world. Galleries closed, exhibitions were canceled, and the uncertainty left many artists and collectors on edge. Navigating this crisis required not only financial acumen but also a deep understanding of the emotional landscape of my clients and partners.
Artists, by nature, possess sensitive personalities. Their creative work is deeply personal, and managing these sensitivities while guiding them through the business side of art has been a delicate balancing act. It is crucial to create an environment where they feel supported and understood, allowing them to thrive as both creators and professionals.
In an increasingly digital world, staying updated with the latest communication channels and marketing strategies has become essential. The rapid evolution of technology demands constant learning and adaptation. I had to embrace new tools and platforms, ensuring that my artists could maintain a strong online presence and connect with their audience effectively.
Marketing and promoting artists comes with its own set of challenges, particularly in terms of cost. The expenses associated with high-quality marketing campaigns can be a barrier for emerging artists who are just starting to build their reputation. Finding creative and budget-friendly ways to showcase their work while maximizing visibility has been a key focus of my efforts.
Convincing artists to maintain a consistent level of quality and professionalism is another ongoing challenge. Building trust with collectors is vital, and it requires artists to deliver exceptional work consistently. I strive to instill confidence in them, emphasizing the importance of reliability in their artistic journey and how it ultimately enhances their appeal to potential buyers.
Beyond these challenges, there are operational and logistical hurdles that arise daily. From managing schedules and coordinating exhibitions to ensuring smooth communication among team members, the intricacies of running an art business demand a keen eye for detail and strong organizational skills.
Despite these challenges, each obstacle has reinforced my commitment to my artists and the art community. The journey may be fraught with difficulties, but the rewards of witnessing artists flourish, connecting them with passionate collectors, and contributing to the vibrant tapestry of the art world make every struggle worthwhile. In this ever-evolving landscape, I remain dedicated to forging paths of success for both myself and the talented individuals I have the privilege to represent.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The most important lessons I learned from the COVID-19 crisis include:
1. Reducing operational costs as much as possible: I realized the importance of managing expenses and streamlining operations to ensure business sustainability during crises.
2. Relying on online marketing and sales: The crisis strongly encouraged a digital transformation, helping to reach a broader audience and increase sales through online channels.
3. Building relationships based on trust and solid contracts: I understood that strong business relationships built on trust contribute to stability in difficult times, rather than relying solely on financial interests.
4. Believing in employees and not letting go of talent: I recognized that investing in people and retaining talent is vital for long-term success.
5. Having cash in the bank and not touching it for such circumstances: I learned the importance of building a financial reserve to face emergencies and ensure business continuity.
6. Not missing any opportunity to acquire important artworks: I realized that opportunities can be rare, and it’s essential to seize them when they arise, especially in the art world.
These lessons provide a comprehensive perspective on how to adapt to challenges and strengthen resilience in the face of future crises.
