Today we’d like to introduce you to Mellissa Tong.
Mellissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my career as a TV Newscaster and Reporter in 1994, after completing my MFA degree at the California Institute of the Arts. Besides anchoring the news, I was also tasked with producing a daily 5-minute human interest segment where I interviewed thousands of people and crafted over 1,200 on-air stories. I didn’t know it at the time, but those 4 years laid a solid foundation for me as a storyteller. Storytelling has become my second nature. After the news job, I explored the fiction side and worked on a CBS prime-time scripted show called Marital Law before founding my company, DuckPunk Productions, Inc.
At DuckPunk, I’ve been producing and directing TV commercials, branded content, independent films, and documentaries. Some of our clients are Nissan, Verizon, Wells Fargo, Old Navy, and McDonald’s, to name a few. Since the Pandemic, we’ve broadened our focus and been working as the enterprise narrative strategist to B2B organizations, helping them align their narratives before they go on camera – especially in moments of complexity, transformation, or high visibility.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The one thing about entrepreneurship is that it’s never a straight line. I majored in music composition and minored in English Literature in college. When I first started operating a business, I really had no clue. I didn’t know anything about customer acquisition, business development, or reading financial statements. But eventually, you do learn from your mistakes and get better at things.
But overall, I want to point out a scenario I’ve seen over and over. What happens before the camera rolls matters more than the edit. Storytelling on camera isn’t about shooting beautiful footage and hoping the story appears in editing. When organizations invest in video, every frame communicates something, whether it was intentional or not.
What often determines the impact of an enterprise video isn’t production quality. It’s whether the story was clearly defined and aligned before the camera even turned on. When that foundation isn’t in place, visuals unintentionally pull attention away from the message instead of reinforcing it.
You can light it beautifully. You can cut it perfectly. But you can’t edit clarity into a story that was never defined. When the story is clear first, everything that follows has a stronger foundation to stand on.
We’ve been impressed with DuckPunk Productions, Inc., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
DuckPunk is a 25-year-old award-winning enterprise narrative alignment and video production partner. We partner with enterprise and B2B organizations to align narratives before high-visibility moments, change initiatives, or public storytelling efforts. Our work focuses on clarifying what truly needs to be said, aligning stakeholders early, and ensuring messages hold up once they’re public. Engagements include enterprise narrative alignment, executive and leadership communications, and keynote speaking or facilitated workshops that support clarity, trust, and action when the stakes are high.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My mentors and advisors obviously deserve all the credit. They’ve helped me tremendously over the years. I almost quit and started another business in 2000, but one of my mentors, John Birchbauer, talked me out of it, and I ultimately re-invented the business and added consulting as a service. That has completely given new life to my business. My other 2 advisors, John Pieto and Aggie Clark, also helped me a great deal with fine-tuning and honing in on my branding and marketing, something essential to every business, regardless of your size.
