Inspiring Conversations with Melissa Lander of Stand Out Advocates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Lander.

Hi Melissa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into advocacy started in 2009 when my son was diagnosed with autism. Like so many parents, I was suddenly thrown into a system filled with acronyms, paperwork, and endless meetings. I felt overwhelmed and unprepared — but I quickly realized that my voice mattered and that I had to learn how to fight for my child.

What began as advocating for him turned into a much larger calling. Over the past 10 years, we have helped countless families navigate IHSS assessments, and regional center services.

That’s why I co-founded Stand Out Advocates with my partner Marlene Lueck— to create a team that blends professional expertise with lived experience. We walk alongside families so they don’t need to feel as lost and confused as we did.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenges is facing systems that often feel stacked against families. State and local agencies don’t make it easy to access the support. It’s a “you don’t know what you don’t know” system. That kind of constant resistance can be exhausting at a time when you are relying on accurate, timely information.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Stand Out Advocates is a family advocacy organization dedicated to supporting children and families as they navigate school districts, regional centers, and state agencies. We are advocates for state services such as IHSS and regional center case management, specializing in representing our clients in front of administrative law judges in the county of appeals for IHSS and regional centers.

At our core we are a person centered special needs wrap around service.

What sets us apart is the blend of professional expertise and lived experience. It is a job you can only truly do if it keeps you up at night because you know how critical it is.

I’m especially proud of the trust we’ve built with our clients. We are built solely on referrals. Not only that we have 4 former client who have joined our team after working with us. They learned and became empowered by their journey and love helping others have hope. To me that is the best compliment of all.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
What I want readers to know most is that you are not alone. Whether you’re a parent navigating your child’s diagnosis, a family trying to make sense of school or state systems, or simply someone who wants to be a stronger advocate — there is support out there.

Advocacy can feel overwhelming, but every child deserves a voice and every family deserves to be heard. If sharing my story inspires even one parent to feel more empowered, more hopeful, or more willing to keep fighting, then this work is worth it.
