Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Giammattei.
Hi Maria, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I think about my story, I feel a flood of emotions, because I realize that my journey has always included the people I love. I come from a large, close-knit family with deep Hispanic and Italian roots. I grew up in El Salvador, the smallest country in Central America—a land of breathtaking natural beauty, warm tropical weather, and some of the most stunning beaches in the world. It is a place rich in family traditions, where everyone knows each other, or at least knows a member of your family. Growing up there felt like living in a community where everyone is family.
But life was not always easy. My childhood, like that of many who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, was marked by challenges: a civil war that lasted over a decade, earthquakes, floods, and social hardships. Yet even in the midst of war, happiness was possible—thanks to the Christian faith that defines our people. Faith gave us hope and strength. My parents were the greatest architects of our lives, raising three children amidst uncertainty. Some days we had enough, other days we had nothing, and we never knew what tomorrow would bring. Life taught us to live in the present and to find joy despite adversity. Happiness became simple: enjoying nature, listening to the wind, playing dolls with my sister, laughing and skipping rope with friends, sharing meals with family, and visiting my grandparents. Those simple moments, filled with love and togetherness, were some of the most precious of my life.
Having my parents, siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents and even great-grandparents, was my greatest treasure—and that is the person I have become. My life is built on beautiful memories, learning to focus on the good rather than the fear, pain, and uncertainty that were also part of my upbringing.
I attended a Catholic school for girls, where discipline, manners, and academic excellence were highly valued. There, I received not only a high-quality education but also a foundation of values that has guided me throughout my life. After high school, I pursued a law degree, and during my university years, I met the love of my life, Luis. After graduating, I worked for over 15 years at one of the most prestigious law firms, specializing in legal writing and translation in Spanish.
Yet life’s uncertainties touched our family again, and we sought new opportunities. We have lived in El Salvador, Europe, and now California, each move bringing growth, new dreams, and fresh beginnings. With my beloved husband, I have been married for 26 years, and together we have four wonderful children: Valeria, Carlos, Rafael, and Gabriel. Their presence has made our family even closer and more special. Each child has brought new dreams and hope into my life. My husband and children are my greatest treasure—they give me strength, inspiration, and motivation every day. I am inspired by them constantly, and each of them has helped me build my dreams.
In California, we discovered new opportunities and passions. Like many families, we faced the challenges of the pandemic, which changed our lives. One day, while staying at home together, I began exploring a new business. What started as helping a friend with Spanish grew into helping more people, families, and students. Over time, I reinvented myself and became a small business owner, creating an online Spanish school, Spanishtutor4u. But this has never been a solo journey—my husband has been by my side, supporting every decision, contributing his ideas and expertise, and giving me the space to dedicate myself to my students.
Behind me and my business are many people. My husband and children are deeply involved in my life and work, and each of them has played an important role. My life and my business are not mine alone—they are part of a collective dream we have built together. I may be the face people see today, but behind me are my family: my husband, children, parents, siblings, and grandparents. My parents and grandparents shaped the person I am, instilling values, traditions, and resilience. If you see me, you also see them.
I am a strong woman thanks to my ancestors, my parents, my siblings—an older sister and a younger brother—and the wisdom of my grandparents. My life has been blessed with love, traditions, courage, and adventure. These small details—the memories, the love, and the sacrifices of so many—are my greatest treasures. My heritage is not in material things; it is in the love of my family, the resilience of my people, and the foundation of values that have guided my life.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey has not always been smooth, and the challenges along the way have shaped both my personal and professional life. As mentioned, growing up in El Salvador, I was surrounded by a loving, large family. Life was full of simple joys—Yet, it was also a time marked by uncertainty: a civil war in the 80’s, natural disasters, and social challenges of a post war diveded society, poverty and very few opportunities, even for professionals, created an environment where stability was never guaranteed. These experiences taught me to cherish the present, to find happiness in small moments, and to rely on faith and family as anchors through difficult times. As I grew older, challenges continued in new forms. Pursuing a law degree and working for over 15 years at a prestigious international firm demanded dedication, focus, and long hours, while balancing the needs of my family. Later, moving with my husband and children from El Salvador to Europe and eventually California brought cultural transitions, adaptation, and the challenge of starting anew multiple times. Starting my own business, Spanishtutor4u, during the pandemic was another test of resilience. What began as helping friends with Spanish lessons grew into a full-fledged online school. Building it required learning new skills, managing uncertainty, and embracing risks. Yet I was never alone—my catholic faith has always tought me to trust in God and at the same time, work with excelence, work giving my best, is my expression of love for God and others, my husband has been my partner in every decision, he is in charge of some of the programs, my older kids have also become tutors and my younger children have also brought energy, inspiration, and hope to this venture. Behind the face of the business is a family whose support, love, and contributions make everything possible. The obstacles along my path—from personal and professional challenges to the broader hardships of life—have strengthened my resolve and deepened my gratitude. They have shown me that resilience, collaboration, and love are more powerful than adversity, and that even in difficult times, dreams can grow and flourish when nurtured by family and faith.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Spanishtutor4u is a family-owned business based in California, offering a personalized and interactive online Spanish program designed to meet the needs of students of all ages, abilities, professions, and learning goals.
The story of Spanishtutor4u began in 2020, during the uncertainty and anxiety of the COVID-19 pandemic. While staying at home with my family, I began helping friends and students with Spanish lessons. What started as small acts of sharing my language and culture quickly grew into a vision: to create a space where anyone could learn Spanish from the comfort of their home, while also discovering the richness, warmth, and vibrancy of Hispanic culture. This vision became our signature “Let’s Conquer Spanish” method.
Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States, and in places like California, it is essential for communication in family, work, and community life. At Spanishtutor4u, we go beyond grammar and vocabulary: we help students think, feel, and communicate in Spanish naturally. Our programs are fully personalized, interactive, and designed to help students gain confidence, overcome fear, and make Spanish a living part of their everyday lives.
What truly sets Spanishtutor4u apart is the family and values behind the business. I am a native Spanish speaker with a background in law, legal translation, and education, which allows me to bring structure, precision, and clarity to every lesson. But this is not a one-person journey—my husband has been my partner in every decision, contributing ideas, organizing programs, and helping me focus on students. Our four children bring energy, inspiration, and hope, and each of them has contributed to shaping the school. Behind my work is a network of love, collaboration, and shared effort; while I may be the face of the business, it is truly a family endeavor.
This approach reflects my personal journey. I grew up in El Salvador, in a large family with Hispanic and Italian roots, surrounded by traditions, faith, and resilience. My parents and grandparents instilled values of perseverance, gratitude, and compassion that guide every part of my life. Those lessons have influenced how I teach: with patience, empathy, and encouragement. I understand the challenges of learning a new language because I experienced them myself, and I want each student to feel supported and inspired on their journey.
I am most proud of how Spanishtutor4u connects people—not only to the Spanish language but to a culture full of life, music, traditions, and community. Every lesson is an opportunity to share knowledge, joy, and the heritage I cherish, and seeing my students succeed, gain confidence, and embrace Spanish as part of their lives is my greatest reward.
At Spanishtutor4u, our mission is simple: to provide a memorable, enriching, and engaging experience for every learner. We want readers to know that learning Spanish with us is not just about language—it is about connection, culture, and belonging. Through Spanishtutor4u, students discover a new world, and at the heart of it is the same foundation that has guided my life: family, faith, and a love for sharing what truly matters.
How do you think about happiness?
For me, true happiness begins with my faith in God—the source of all genuine joy, strength, and peace in my life. From there, my family is my greatest blessing. My husband and children bring purpose, love, and inspiration to every day, and the bond we share fills my life with meaning. Each of my children has brought new dreams and hope into my life, and together, they help me keep growing, learning, and striving.
But my happiness goes beyond the present—it is deeply rooted in my memories and the legacy of my family. Growing up in El Salvador, the simple joys of life shaped who I am: listening to music with my family, sharing meals, playing with my siblings and cousins, visiting my grandparents, and celebrating traditions that filled our days with love and warmth. These moments, simple yet extraordinary, live in me and continue to bring me joy. My parents and grandparents, through their guidance, values, and example, shaped the woman I am today, and their presence is always part of my life.
In my work, I extend this love and joy to my students. They are part of my extended family. Connecting with them goes beyond teaching; it is about building relationships filled with trust, encouragement, and care. Sharing my native language and serving as an ambassador of Hispanic culture—through stories, music, traditions, and the vibrancy of everyday life—is my greatest source of happiness.
Ultimately, my joy comes from connection, both past and present: from faith, from family, from cherished memories, and from the opportunity to share my heritage and love of Spanish with others. True happiness, for me, is simple, warm, and full of love—it is living a life surrounded by people, culture, and moments that nourish the soul.
