Inspiring Conversations with Malekae Breton of Good Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malekae Breton.

Hi Malekae, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Mendocino, a small coastal town in Northern California, where my parents raised pigs, goats, and chickens and grew nearly everything we ate. That early connection to fresh, local food sparked my love for cooking and the rhythms of farm-to-table living. My mom, a chef in her twenties, taught me how to cook from a young age, and that hands-on experience shaped my approach to food today—simple, seasonal, and deeply connected to the land.
After high school, I attended UCLA and earned my bachelor’s degree in International Development, while taking several courses in food studies. My passion for food and culture eventually led me to Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, where I earned my degree in cuisine at the school’s original location. From there, I spent time working in restaurants and kitchens that emphasized creativity, precision, and community—values that still define my work today.
Over time, I found myself drawn to private cheffing, where I could create personalized dining experiences and build genuine connections with the people I cook for. That one-on-one relationship between chef and client reminded me of why I fell in love with food in the first place—it’s not just about flavor, but about care and shared experience.
In 2025, I launched Good Company, a premium food and drinks agency offering full-service catering, private chef experiences, and event planning across Los Angeles, Orange County, Ojai and Santa Barbara. Good Company is built on the same values that shaped me growing up: quality ingredients, authentic connection, and a deep respect for the craft of hospitality. Whether it’s a private dinner or a large-scale event, our goal is to make every gathering feel thoughtful, beautiful, and unforgettable.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. For a long time, I was doing everything myself—cooking, coordinating, marketing, and managing clients—all while figuring out how to actually build a business from the ground up. I didn’t come from a business background, so I had to learn everything as I went, from pricing and permits to branding and logistics.
But those challenges also pushed me to grow. They taught me resilience, resourcefulness, and the importance of trusting my vision even when things felt uncertain. Every event, client, and setback helped shape what Good Company has become today—a business rooted in creativity, care, and connection.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Good Company is a full-suite food and drinks agency built on the belief that great hospitality starts with connection. We’re a one-stop destination for effortless event coordination, offering catering, bartending, private chefs, coffee carts, and more. By bringing together the region’s best culinary talent and premium brands under one roof, we make it easy for clients to create seamless, elevated experiences that feel personal and memorable.
What truly sets Good Company apart is our commitment to thoughtful service and attention to detail—from the ingredients we source to the way each event comes to life. Our mission is simple: to craft unforgettable moments through exceptional food, drink, and hospitality.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I think the biggest quality that’s contributed to my success is simply sticking with it. Building something from the ground up takes patience, and there were plenty of times when it would’ve been easier to give up. But staying consistent and believing in the long game has made all the difference.
I also credit a lot of my growth to the relationships I’ve built with my clients. So much of this business comes down to trust and genuine connection—people remember how you make them feel. And on the creative side, I’ve always tried to think outside the box with marketing and presentation. Finding fresh, unexpected ways to share what we do has helped Good Company stand out and continue to grow.
