Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Sweeney.
Hi Lauren , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My career has evolved at the intersection of leadership, people development, and organizational impact.
I began my professional journey as an entrepreneur, spending over 15 years building and leading businesses. That experience gave me a real-world understanding of leadership—what it takes to make decisions, build teams, manage growth, and stay grounded in mission while navigating complexity. Early on, I saw that the biggest constraint to growth wasn’t talent or strategy alone—it was leadership capacity.
That realization led me into leadership development and coaching. Over the past five-plus years at Rise Up For You, I’ve served in senior leadership and now as a coach and trainer, designing and delivering SHRM-certified leadership, HR, and culture programs. I’ve worked with a wide range of organizations—from nonprofits to Fortune 500 companies—supporting leaders in areas like communication, feedback, emotional intelligence, accountability, and change management. That experience sharpened my ability to translate leadership theory into practical, behavior-changing tools.
As my work expanded, so did the scope of what leaders were asking for—particularly around strategic clarity, board effectiveness, leadership pipelines, and sustainable growth. That’s what led me to formally launch The Riviera Group, where my focus is on advising boards, executives, and leadership teams through moments of growth, transition, and complexity.
Through The Riviera Group, I facilitate board retreats, leadership academies, and strategic planning sessions that help organizations align people, culture, and strategy. My approach is grounded in clarity, courage, and execution—helping leaders move beyond good intentions into aligned action.
Today, my work is about building leadership capacity at every level so organizations can grow sustainably, lead people well, and create lasting impact.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No—it hasn’t been a smooth road, and I actually see that as one of the most valuable parts of my journey.
One of the biggest challenges has been navigating growth while holding multiple leadership identities at the same time—entrepreneur, senior leader, coach, and now founder of The Riviera Group. There were seasons where I was building systems, credibility, and confidence all at once, often without a clear roadmap. Learning when to say yes, when to set boundaries, and when to let go has been a continual lesson.
Another challenge has been leading through change—both personally and organizationally. I’ve supported leaders and organizations during moments of uncertainty, burnout, and transformation, while also evolving my own role. That required learning how to stay grounded, manage energy, and model the very leadership behaviors I teach—especially when things felt ambiguous or uncomfortable.
I’ve also learned that leadership development work is deeply human. You don’t always see immediate results, and progress isn’t linear. There were moments where impact was happening quietly, beneath the surface, long before it showed up in performance or outcomes. Trusting the process—and myself—was a growth edge.
Those challenges ultimately sharpened my clarity, resilience, and approach to leadership. They reinforced my belief that sustainable success doesn’t come from avoiding struggle, but from learning how to lead through it with intention, self-awareness, and courage.
We’ve been impressed with The Riviera Group, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Riviera Group is a leadership advisory and development firm focused on helping organizations grow with clarity, courage, and alignment—especially during moments of change, scale, or transition.
At its core, our work centers on leadership capacity. We partner with boards, executives, and leadership teams to strengthen how they think, decide, and lead people. Our offerings include board and executive retreats, leadership academies, strategic planning, executive coaching, and organizational effectiveness work that connects people strategy with business and mission outcomes.
What we’re known for is our ability to bridge strategy and humanity. We don’t just talk about leadership in theory—we translate it into practical behaviors, systems, and decisions leaders can actually use. Our work blends governance, culture, emotional intelligence, accountability, and execution, so organizations don’t just feel inspired—they leave aligned and ready to act.
What truly sets The Riviera Group apart is our dual perspective. We bring deep experience working with large organizations and nonprofits, combined with real-world leadership and entrepreneurial experience. That allows us to meet leaders where they are—whether they’re navigating board dynamics, scaling a team, managing burnout, or preparing for the next phase of growth.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is that The Riviera Group has become known for creating high-trust, high-impact spaces. Clients consistently tell us they value our ability to ask the right questions, name what others avoid, and facilitate conversations that move groups from complexity to clarity. We don’t impose a one-size-fits-all model; we tailor our approach to each organization’s mission, culture, and goals.
What I want readers to know is that The Riviera Group exists to help leaders lead well—especially when it’s hard. We believe sustainable success comes from aligned leadership, healthy culture, and the courage to make thoughtful, values-driven decisions. Everything we do is designed to help organizations not just perform, but endure and thrive.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I appreciate most is the sense of possibility here. Our city brings together innovation, community engagement, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit, while still valuing relationships and quality of life. People are willing to collaborate, serve on boards, mentor others, and invest their time and talent back into the community. There’s a real belief that leadership and civic involvement matter—and that shows up in our nonprofits, small businesses, and local organizations.
I also value the diversity of people and industries. That mix creates rich conversations, fresh ideas, and opportunities to make meaningful impact across sectors.
What I like least about our city
Like many growing cities, the pace can be intense. There’s often pressure to do more, move faster, and constantly scale—which can make it easy for people and organizations to slip into burnout or lose sight of long-term sustainability. I also think we’re still growing in how we address issues like housing affordability and equitable access to opportunity.
That said, I see these challenges as opportunities. They’re exactly why thoughtful leadership, collaboration, and values-driven decision-making are so important—and why I remain optimistic about where our city is headed.
