Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Currens.
Hi Laura, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was burnt out working in a traditional ortho clinic where I had started a pelvic health physical therapy program. I was having to see complicated pelvic cases in the same time as simple ankle sprain cases, and it just became too much. I was feeling frustrated at work, felt I wasn’t helping people as well as I knew I could, and wasn’t feeling satisfied. I was also coming off of an intense phase of life- having been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020 when I had two little kids also changed my view on life and made me realize I couldn’t keep doing what I was doing. Cancer makes you reassess your life and reminds you life isn’t guaranteed. After finishing a year of surgeries, chemo, and lots of lows, I recovered and went back to work, but I was starting to feel like I needed another option for my life and family. I decided to give business a try by renting a room from my friend’s practice, and then shortly after got my own space. I quit my job and started home health to subsidize income since I’m our family’s breadwinner. I’ve been in business one year and nine months, and I moved into larger space with two treatment rooms this past summer, have one PT and two admin on staff. It’s been an amazing journey and beyond grateful for all of the community support and wonderful patients we get to see!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running a business has been the most challenging thing I have ever done other than raising children. I’ve been a physical therapist for 14 years, but business is a totally different world. Hiring has been my biggest challenge. Learning to find the right candidates, training, and marketing to fill schedules is a lot to learn. Teaching patient retention and how much we have to offer as physical therapists, not just with pain management but also wellness, is very different than what we learn in school. Teaching how to look at the body holistically and really figuring out the root issue versus treating a symptom is not easy to teach someone. Making mistakes with hiring has made me grow and organize my business better to make it easier and more efficient for staff coming on and hopefully less overwhelming. Pelvic health is a lot to learn, and finding good candidates that are passionate to learn and motivated to really think outside of the box can be really hard. Super grateful for my team, and I’m continuing to grow systems in business, and training protocols to help my future hiring process.
As you know, we’re big fans of Dynamic Flow Physical Therapy Inc. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a pelvic health physical therapy practice in Ventura, CA. We see women and men struggling with pelvic health concerns, pregnancy, and postpartum. Pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, leakage, bowel and bladder issues, post-surgery complications, nerve issues in pelvis and abdomen, abdominal pain, GI issues, labor preparation during pregnancy, and postpartum recovery are some of the types of cases we treat. We are a super passionate clinic and determined to get you back to doing what you love by figuring out the root of the pain or symptoms so we can truly resolve or learn to manage symptoms. We work closely with other providers since pelvic health can be complex, and often, a multidisciplinary approach is need to achieve amazing outcomes. We are focused on the patient, their goals, and individualizing a program for them. Our process involves three phases: phase one is relieving symptoms, phase two is restoring strength and coordination, and phase three is returning to sports and activities. I’m proud that we are known in the community for achieving amazing outcomes for our patients and bridging the gap back to sports and activities and overall long-term health and wellness.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I would say I’m a very determined person, which is so important in business since there are so many highs and lows and risks to take. When I get passionate about something, I really put my all into it and am motivated to learn as much as possible to be successful. I never thought I would have my own business; it truly wasn’t on my radar at all. But I’m super proud of how much I’ve grown as a business owner in so many ways, and it’s really helped me grow as a physical therapist too. I’ve never felt like a very confident person, which my friends find hilarious since they see me as very confident, but it’s made me see it more for myself. I’m not a front-and-center type of person, so social media, photos, and large group networking events are hard for me, but I’ve learned to open up and do my best to help educate the community on all pelvic health has to offer.
