Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth L. Johnson.
Hi Kenneth L., we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in the Jordan Downs and Nickerson Gardens projects in South Central L.A. As a young man I was always fascinated by sound, so I took up the pursuit of music. I built my first bass guitar by hand and formed a local band. Because I was also interested in the technical aspects of capturing and manipulating sound, I attended the University of Sound Arts in Hollywood CA. where I studied Electronic Music Production. I also attended Long Beach City College, where I studied Recording Engineering and Music Production and was on the National Dean’s list. I then went on to work as a freelance engineer in various Los Angeles studios. I progressed from music to sound editing when given the opportunity to attend the Todd AO Studio’s Electronic Editorial Workshop. After relentless efforts on training reels, I was hired in January 1995.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a easy road. The industry is difficult to navigate. I have encountered nepotism and racism along the way. If not for JR Delange who was Executive VP at Todd AO Studios in 1995, I probably wouldn’t have been able to be in this industry. He keep me on the learning path when others wanted me, to as they said come back when I had gotten some experience. It was the old catch 22.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I guess I can say I was lucky to have had few good people recognize my talents and help me, by giving me the opportunity to display my gifts I do believe, that I was also lucky to find something that I loved and have been able to make a living at, so I could provide for my family.
