Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce Marie Partise
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was always interested in beauty and skin care as a teenager. I graduated high school at 16 years old and obtained my skin care license at the age of 19. I am the 436th licensed esthetician in the state of CA. I came from an entrepreneurial family, so my father lovingly put me in business at the age of 19. I originally opened my business in an Orange County hair salon for 3 months, and then I made the move to a hair salon in Beverly Hills. When I started my business I was doing facials and makeup but found there was a bigger demand for skin care so I focused on that. I took additional classes at The International Dermal Institute with Jane Wurwand, and become one the first distributors of Dermalogica in 1986. After 12 years I opened a skin care salon with staff a few doors south of my original location. At that point of my career I was working on clients and managing a staff of two estheticians and a receptionist. Once my lease was up, 8 years later, I decided to open in the Beverly Hills Triangle area, one block west of Rodeo Drive. I joined a very “happening” salon and went solo once again. Just recently that salon closed, so my new spa is located in a beautiful art deco building also in the heart of Beverly Hills. Because of my relationship with Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute, I have promoted products on QVC and taught a seminar at FIDM college in downtown Los Angeles.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some challenges came from having staff, having to train them, and then decisions of estheticians to move on to other careers. I believe the industry does have a strong turn over because it does take time to build a clientele.
Covid was a nightmare for our industry. The fact that one could get a facial in a doctor’s office with the same PPE equipment but we were not allowed to work was a huge challenge we had to face. The Professional Beauty Industry, with attorney Fred Jones, asked me to represent our industry with a lawsuit against Governor Newsom. We received contributions of $50,000 from estheticians and many skin care companies, including Dermalogica. By the time we were moving forward with the lawsuit the Covid numbers had gone down and we were finally allowed to return to work.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Joyce Marie of Beverly Hills?
I am proud to still offer facials with the “hands on” approach including massage and the traditional European Facial techniques. I do offer treatments with light therapy, microdermabrasion, oxygen, microchanneling, peels, and specialty masks. The machine treatments address certain issues, but I still believe there is a desire for the human touch. A place where someone can come, relax, feel rejuvenated and taken care of in a nurturing type of way. I am still a proud retailer of Dermalogica. I feel that it addresses many of the clients needs and the price point is affordable. Currently I am very involved with the Beverly Hills Chamber, and WBN (Women’s Business Network) a part of the BH Chamber. I continue to work with Attorney Fred Jones and the Professional Beauty Federation to help keep our industry informed and educated. The journey has been very fulfilling, and I am so grateful that I knew at a young age what career would bring me success and happiness.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I feel all estheticians in the state of California should be members of the Professional Beauty Federation. of CA. They offer support and are dedicated to the growth and well being of our industry: https://www.beautyfederation.org. The membership is $50.00 per year.
Also the ASCP- https://www.ascpskincare.com, which offers insurance and liability coverage for our industry. Something everyone needs to have.
