Inspiring Conversations with Joya Ma of JOYA MA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joya Ma. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Joya Ma

Joya Ma is a multidisciplinary creative with a degree in fashion design and entrepreneurship from the esteemed Parsons School of Design. Born in Los Angeles, California, but has spent her life in Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Arizona, as well as world traveling experience, Joya has a global vision and interpretation of art and fashion. A CFDA finalist and the recipient of Underfashion Lingerie, Joya was a mentee at Carolina Herrera. After working under some of the industry’s top talent, with residencies at Christian Siriano, Alexander Wang, Zang Toi, and Christian Cowan, Joya launched her own luxury fashion brand Joya Ma.

Joya utilizes clothing as a medium and connection to express herself explicitly, upfront, and straightforward. An advocate for women to have their own voice, to be confident, and to encourage everyone to express themselves no matter what culture they come from. Her use of bold, highly saturated color and rich textures create high-quality, captivating pieces that ooze femininity – with an added touch of class, sophistication, and a dash of whimsy.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has never been a smooth road. In fact, it’s quite the opposite, but I think this is what makes it beautiful to become not just a designer, but also an entrepreneur. It is an entrepreneur’s duty to face and solve obstacles. Starting from the beginning, I had challenges designing items that’s not just my personal taste but also had to fit the market, making everything more wearable, not just a piece of art that people have no desires to wear. Then we have to solve problems with suppliers, with minimum of quantity. As a start-up brand, we don’t have large bulks nor we wanted to hold on inventory. We are a small team, so everyone has to be multi-tasking.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Joya Ma Fashions, we are dedicated to empowering modern, independent women through bold and fearless fashion. Our luxurious garments blend classic influences with dynamic curves and sharp edges, embodying our philosophy of rebellious ambition and desire. We believe in embracing individuality and self-expression, while also promoting sustainability and ethical practices. Our vibrant, colorful pieces are inspired by our cultural background and designed to make our clients feel beautiful and unique. Through our collections, we invite women to take the spotlight and express themselves with confidence and a sense of humor. At Joya Ma, fashion is not just a form of expression; it’s an experience to be celebrated.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I always have a special connection with Los Angeles because it is the city where I was born. It’s a city of freedom where people are more cozy and less dressy. I like how it has the nature, the ocean, and the seashore, and it has the mountains and lakes. What I dislike about the city is probably the general fashion styles, where there’s mostly just hoodies and sweats. I think in this regard, I’m more on New York’s side. You can never feel overdressed or underdressed because no one can judge you.
