Inspiring Conversations with Jeff Quebral of Old School Hustle Basketball

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Quebral.

Jeff Quebral

Hi Jeff, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was a competitive basketball player for over 20 years – local YMCA, middle school, high school, college intramural, and adult leagues. I loved the team and camaraderie aspects of the sport and exercise. After college, I did computer work at Apple, Art Center, and freelance for a combined decade. I fell into the worst shape of my life, sitting and being sedentary.

I stumbled into a CrossFit gym in 2012. I fell in love with the community and camaraderie – it reminded me of being on a team when I played competitive basketball… and the rest was history. I looked into being a qualified coach and been coaching at CrossFit 626 in San Marino, CA since 2013.

In 2019, I took about a 5-year tangent to Oregon and Washington state. Moving my wife and kids with me, we traveled thru various places in the Pacific Northwest for my work. I fought wildfires as a wildland firefighter, contract saw operator & instructor, and hazard timber feller. I purposed my knowledge in fitness and human performance to push my personal boundaries in a hard-labor, highly skilled industry. Learning a new career at the age of 38 years with peers in their 20’s was challenging. I didn’t have fresh legs and lungs like them, but life-experience helped a lot.

In 2022, my father-in-law became ill and succumbed to his illness. My wife and I made the decision to move back to California to bring our children closer to their “papa” for a forever farewell. Thus, coming full circle and becoming a youth basketball coach and fitness trainer as my profession again.

I love origin stories. I hope one day my children would not only be fascinated about my journey, but be empowered to never be afraid to change and adapt when they need to. Life is not meant to be boxed in and sealed… but to be opened and shared with others. And because of this, media production is another passion of mine helps others tell their visual stories. I love capturing moments and creating legacies.

In summery, I’m just a God-fearing husband and father of 6 (with 1 more on the way) who helps people live a healthy life worth sharing…

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road. However, it’s what makes it very special and worth-while in my opinion. Being a coach/trainer isn’t easily the most lucrative career. But being in the “education” space, sort of speak, we do it because we’re passionate about it. We love bringing out the potential of others into reality.

It’s always a constant battle of prescribing people what they want AND need. Exercise and training isn’t always “sexy,” especially when our lives are constantly on social media – as humans we are driven by provocative content. And most of the things we need in our lives are “boring.”

The constant waves of what’s good and bad for you and your clients can be very fatiguing. Even when we have a firm grasp of what the truth is, what people see on TV and social media will always try to convince them otherwise.

Giving people what they want AND need in balance is “the art of coaching.”

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Old School Hustle Basketball?
Old School Hustle (OSH) Basketball Academy is a training program that utilizes the sport of basketball as a vehicle to instill values such as work ethic, responsibility, rising above adversity, teamwork, leadership, and problem solving skills that directly transfers to everyday life outside of the gym.

Sport is one of the pinnacle points of human performance and expression. Much like singers, dancers, and artists, athletes require high levels of discipline, training, commitment, and grit.

Basketball kept me off the streets and kept me grounded. I was fortunate enough to have coaches that became mentors beyond the hoop and hardwood floors. Most importantly it taught me that making mistakes was okay. Practice was the environment where we should be making mistakes because we were facilitated a space to learn and fix them.

When I became a strength and conditioning trainer, I quickly realized that I wish I had the same access to a trainer that would elevate my physicality. Generally, a sports coach only knows the sport, and a trainer only knows how to train.

What makes me known and different from others is my experience in both worlds – a competitive basketball player for over 20 years as well as a qualified and credentialed fitness trainer. I can break down the game in both the mental and physical aspects, progressively training my young athletes in the most efficient and safest manner.

The main goal of my brand is to instill that old school mindset of hard work and discipline. Virtuosity – doing the common things uncommonly well. Meaning I do not rush the development of these young athletes. Respect must be given to growth, hormones, and navigating those in a world they are just starting to know. Youth injuries are on the rise and I believe it’s because parents and coaches are rushing these young athletes into the “spotlight.”

Playing sports competitively year-round is so detrimental for these kids. My program is specifically structured to give these young athletes progressive loading with proper off-seasons to help them recover, heal, and enjoy life… as a kid.

OSH Basketball Academy is currently offered in San Marino, CA inside CrossFit 626 as well as in Walnut, CA inside Creatin’ Monsters. My program is also offered thru homeschool groups where funding can be allowed thru their charter as a proper Physical Education class…. just like back in the day.

What matters most to you? Why?
Longevity. Legacy…

Delayed gratification has been a lost art and continues to be lost because of the internet and social media – always on and “information at your fingertips.”

Just like our food – fruit trees, vegetables, and meat – if you want to feast properly and regularly, you must sow in proper seasons. You won’t eat if you don’t plant, water, and trim your trees and plants. You won’t eat if you don’t care for your cow. What we get out in performance is what we invest in 6, 12, 18, 24 months prior.
