Inspiring Conversations with Gary Vasquez of DVDCreative

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Vasquez.

Hi Gary, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
DVDCreative is a Landscape Architecture firm founded 28 years ago. Over the past nearly three decades, DVDC has designed many of the most recognizable and beloved parks throughout Southern California. In the last four years, the firm has broadened its market reach by bringing together an exceptional collective of Landscape Architects with diverse design expertise. With more than 70 years of combined Disney Imagineering experience within our collective, DVDC has expanded its portfolio to include themed entertainment, hospitality, and sports and entertainment developments.

At our core, DVDCreative is driven by a passion for creating meaningful, inspiring spaces that connect people to their surroundings. Our goal is to design environments that enrich communities and offer places where people can gather, celebrate, and experience the world around them.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Over the past three decades, we’ve faced plenty of challenges—but each one has helped shape who we are and how we design. In this field, the real art lies in balance: bringing together the needs of every stakeholder while staying true to the project’s budget, schedule, and vision. Every project we take on is more than just another job—it’s a learning experience that helps us grow and refine our approach for the next one.

With hundreds of parks now part of our story, we’ve learned that every resident is, in a way, a co-creator. Each person has a unique connection to their neighborhood and a vested interest in how their community spaces come to life. That’s why communication and collaboration are at the heart of everything we do. We take pride in creating designs that don’t just look beautiful, but truly reflect the people and stories behind them.

As you know, we’re big fans of DVDCreative . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At DVDCreative, we believe every place has a story—and our mission is to help it shine.
We take pride in uncovering the history behind each site and preserving its unique character in thoughtful, inspiring ways.

One of our favorite examples is Fremont Park in Glendale. As the city’s oldest park, it holds a special place in the community’s heart. When we began its redesign in 2016, our goal was clear: honor its legacy while shaping a vibrant future. The renovation struck a balance between preservation and progress—protecting the park’s beloved mature trees while reimagining familiar landmarks, including the iconic “large slide” that had brought joy to generations of families.

Next, Glendale’s story continues with Central Park Block, the city’s new urban oasis in the heart of downtown. This forthcoming project will create a welcoming green anchor for gathering, recreation, and connection—an evolving centerpiece for community life.

This same dedication to detail and respect for place defines all of our work. Today, we’re shaping expansive new outdoor environments for both the Orange County and Los Angeles Discovery Cube Children’s Museums—dynamic spaces designed to spark creativity, exploration, and hands-on learning in the open air.
At DVDCreative, we see every project as an opportunity to create memorable spaces that celebrate nature, honor community identity, and meet real needs with purpose and beauty.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Experience is our most valuable resource—and we make sure to chase it actively. For us, that means getting our team out into the world to explore, test, and evaluate a wide range of architectural and environmental spaces. From the latest rooftop restaurant to newly designed parks, we’re constantly on the lookout for ideas and techniques that can inspire our next project.

Our learning doesn’t stop there. Every year, we send multiple team members to the ASLA convention, where speakers and field sessions spark a fire of imagination and possibility. These experiences push us to think bigger, innovate smarter, and bring fresh ideas and philosophies to life in the spaces we design. In short, we don’t just observe the world—we let it shape the way we shape the world.
