Today we’d like to introduce you to Coletin Gascho.
Hi Coletin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started as a young man who was talented at sports, where I found my identity in the success of my career. I had a dysfunctional home at the time, so the value of my life would dip and rise depending on the acceptance and affirmation I was getting from sports or from the relationship I was in.
Soon, it all came crumbling down after I was on the verge of achieving my dream, college baseball. After my first college workout, I had to head to Cleveland Clinic to see the best-traveling sports doctor at the time for my shoulder. It had got increasingly worse with every pitching outing, and I had to find the solution quick. I still remember that visit because it wasn’t what I expected. The doctor said, “You are my first patient that I have ever had to tell, I can’t do anything for you”. The Cyst on my shoulder was going to cause more damage to remove than it would to keep it there and let my shoulder hang on as long as it could. And either way it meant the same thing, no more college baseball.
I felt like my value and purpose for life was gone – all my acceptance from the people around me that I lived on would be gone. But that’s when my life changed and for the better. I met Jesus soon after that, and He had a better plan for me; he still had a purpose for my life, and he gave me value that didn’t dip and rise with my performance. He gave me a solid foundation and He gave me the courage to create.
Jesus is who changed everything for me, and He is why I am where I am today. I grew a passion for capturing the Joy in people’s lives or capturing memories they won’t forget, like weddings or big games for athletes. I also have loved getting to capture the move of God at church or on mission trips and share it with the people around me – sharing the same Joy that Jesus gave me in every video I create. That is my desire with Gascho Films, to spread that joy and also capture the “Jesus Moments” as He works in people’s lives around me just like he did mine. Videography and Photography is an amazing avenue to tell stories and capture memories for a lifetime, and it’s a passion I’m excited to continue to grow and dive into deeper with every project.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Personally, having the courage to create wasn’t as easy as I was expecting it to be. When I first began learning and growing in Videography, I was excited to try something new and see what happened. I loved, and still do love, getting to learn new things and creating a project to promote someone’s passion or capture their wedding day. But the more I followed established videographers the more comparison I began feeling. I wanted to create a business that served each client uniquely and supported them, but I felt less than all the established individuals around me. So, for a long time, I could hardly finish a project and didn’t want to start a business after all. If a project didn’t succeed, or if I saw someone do it better, I felt less than, and it would keep me from stepping out and giving it my best shot… since it was attached to my value.
But something God has taught me is that my value is first found in being His son, and since He is my creator, He also gets to define my value. The more I found my value in Him, the more I got the courage to create with the best of my ability in that moment and trusted God to multiply it. So, I created Gascho Films LLC, even as I continued to grow and learn as a videographer. I want to grow and learn from the very talented people around me, and then, with every project, do it to the best of my ability and trust God to help bring creativity and to bless the project.
Another struggle I had was finances. I believe in not having debt for my business and doing my best to pay for it all with cash. In the beginning, this meant I couldn’t upgrade to the newest camera or best equipment. It would get discouraging when I didn’t get bookings, and was just hoping I had enough to cover the subscriptions for this month. But without fail, I would always pray for my business and that God would provide for it, and just in time, I would get enough bookings to not only cover the bills but also to begin saving up for that next equipment upgrade I needed.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Gascho Films LLC?
As of this past year, I am currently a Pastor and Media Director at my church, Firm Foundation Ministries. Along with a small business owner of Gascho Films LLC. My passion is to capture the joy of the Lord in every wedding, to capture “Jesus moments” at church, and to support businesses/musical artists by helping promote their work. I get to create something new every day and serve each individual both at my job at the church & in my small business of Videography. I believe this is what sets me apart as a videographer. God has given me a gift and a purpose to serve and love those around me, He has given me a joy and a freedom that I build into every video I produce. I want people to experience the same Joy and Love that I experience, and I get to share that through the videos I share with people. That is another reason I specialize in weddings – I get to not only capture the amazing memories but I also get to tell a story and share the emotions of the day.
I am most proud of stepping out into my passion that God has given me and making it a business so I can make an impact on everyone I get to serve. It wasn’t till I was 25 that I finally figured out what I wanted to do with my life. But now that I know, I get to give God the best of what I have in this moment and trust him to not only lead me but use me to make an impact on everyone around me. And I could not be more blessed than to do it with my beautiful wife that God has blessed me with. Amy has been my encouragement, and she is the gifted creative that I get my inspiration from.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I grew up watching the MeTv channel on the few channels my family had when I was a kid, so I am a sucker for a good Western movie. Also, I lived in Homer, Alaska for 2 years as I went to Alaska Bible Institute. I also have 2 hours of flight lessons in my logbook as I hope to become a pilot someday soon, but nothing will beat flying in the mountains of Alaska.
