Inspiring Conversations with Cherise Small of The Healing Point Therapy and Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cherise Small.

Hi Cherise, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Pennsylvania and California & CEO of The Healing Point Therapy and Wellness. Currently I reside in Los Angeles where I have been living for the past three years. I moved to LA from Philly in search of new opportunities. With lots of faith and support two years ago, I opened my private practice to serve individuals who need support with their mental health and wellness. Prior to starting my private practice, I gained extensive experience working in a variety of mental health settings. I worked as a therapist in community mental health clinics, inpatient psychiatric hospitals, and outpatient clinics. During this time, I was able to hone my clinical skills and develop a deep understanding of the unique challenges that individuals face in different settings.

After moving to LA and opening The Healing Point Therapy and Wellness, I focused on building a supportive and welcoming environment where individuals can feel safe and supported in their healing journey. I take a holistic approach to therapy, focusing not just on symptom relief but on helping clients achieve their full potential and live fulfilling lives. I feel grateful to be doing work that I am passionate about and that has the potential to make a real difference in people’s lives.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like any journey, there have been some challenges and struggles along the way. Some of the struggles I faced included adjusting to a new environment: Moving from Philly to LA was a big change for me, and it took some time to adjust to the new environment, culture, and people. Building a client base: Starting a private practice is not easy, and building a sustainable client base can be challenging. It required a lot of marketing, networking, and establishing myself in the community. Balancing work and personal life: As a mother, it can be challenging to balance work and personal life. There have been times when I have had to juggle multiple responsibilities and make sacrifices to ensure that I can provide the best possible care for my clients while also being there for my family. Keeping up with ongoing education: As a mental health practitioner, it’s essential to stay current with the latest research and techniques. This requires ongoing education and professional development, which can be time-consuming and challenging to balance with other responsibilities. Despite these challenges, I have learned a lot and have grown both personally and professionally. I believe that the struggles I faced have helped me become a mother, better clinician, and entrepreneur.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Los Angeles is a city that offers a diverse range of attractions and activities that appeal to many people. What I enjoy most about LA is its beautiful beaches, which are great for relaxation after running my business. Another thing that I love about LA is its delicious tacos, which can be found at many local restaurants and food trucks throughout the city. Additionally, LA has many hiking trails that offer stunning views of the city.

One of the biggest drawbacks of LA is the traffic, particularly during peak hours. Navigating the city’s busy highways and streets can be a struggle, and it can take a long time to get from one place to another. This can be frustrating, especially if you’re on a tight schedule.

Overall, while LA has its ups and downs, it’s still a city that offers plenty of opportunities for fun, adventure, and exploration. Whether you’re into beaches, tacos, hiking, or shopping, there’s something for everyone in this vibrant and dynamic city and I think that’s what I like about living here.
