Inspiring Conversations with Chance Mafoua of DME Loft

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chance Mafoua.

Chance Mafoua

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a child, I’ve always enjoyed performance art and the storytelling process. From theater to dance to writing, I’ve always had a passion to share stories and used writing as a creative outlet to deal with the trauma and challenges I experienced. It started with writing poetry, songs, and short stories and eventually evolved into longer-form pieces such as novels and screenplays. For years, I pursued the performing arts aspect of storytelling through music, dance, and theater. I took years of vocal training, dance programs, and acting lessons and took part in various theater productions and dance groups. But along the way, I shifted my interest to behind the scenes and began working in film & television. In the beginning, it was fun and exciting working on different Blockbuster films and meeting different celebrities, but I soon became burnt out and was feeling unfulfilled. I got into the industry thinking I would be involved in the creative process and share stories and ideas, but I was working long hours on set or doing mostly admin and logistical work, far removed from the actual creative process. I needed a change but didn’t know where to start. After a few years of soul searching and over 13 years working professionally in the Hollywood industry, I decided I to pave my own path and launch a PR & media company that focuses on storytelling and helps others share their stories and messages.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. There are so many times I wanted to give up. Working in the entertainment industry is a bumpy road, and I completely understand why so many people quit. The work is unstable, the hours are long, the pay is low unless you are above the line person, and the stress level is through the roof. It’s something you have to really want if you’re going to stick with it in the long run. As a creative person who just wanted to stories, I thought working in film & tv would give me that opportunity to do just that. Unfortunately, nepotism is a huge component in this industry. And those that are born into it or come from money have more opportunities to get these creative opportunities. That means the rest of us have to work that much harder and work for years to really get what where we want to be. The biggest challenge for me was trying to pursue my creative passion while also trying to earn enough money to cover my bills living in one of the most expensive cities in the world.
