Inspiring Conversations with Cass Acosta of Z-Ultimate Self Defense Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cass Acosta.

Hi Cass, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
POW! This was the sound of my childhood. Not just because I was a stereotypical daredevil little boy, but because my dad is a daredevil too. He rides motorcycles, shoots guns, and coolest of all, is a black belt in kempo karate. When I was 5 he put me in training for the first time. It wasn’t the right fit then, but I got back into it when I was a teen with my dad. I wrestled in high school as well and having the extra energy outlet helped my ADHD. 15 years later, I’m a second degree black belt and get to provide the same thing that martial arts gave me, a way to give back to the community and a way to connect with my son.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There were weeks when I wondered if I could keep the doors open. That challenge forced me to step outside my comfort zone. I started reaching out to schools, running free self-defense workshops, and hosting community events. To my surprise, those efforts not only brought in students, but also created stronger connections with families who stayed for the long haul.
Another big challenge was keeping students engaged long-term. Many kids would get excited at first, but then their interest would fade. At first, I saw that as a failure. Over time, I realized I had to improve how I structured classes. I added leadership programs, belt ceremonies, and fun but challenging activities that tied back to discipline and respect. What used to be a weakness became one of our strengths—our retention grew, and our students became more dedicated.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Z-Ultimate Self Defense Studios?
Our mission is to INSPIRE the men, women, and children of our communities to realize their personal best. We offer both private and group instruction to help people help themselves through self-defense. Our personalized approach to meeting our students’ goals is what helps set us apart from our competitors. From helping people recover from injuries to providing practical self-defense courses that helped save a college student’s life during a knife attack, we offer services that genuinely help our community. I’m proud to be a part of that.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I remember in the early days, struggling to get students through the door. I had flyers, ads, and word of mouth, but it felt like nothing was clicking. Then, almost by chance, a local school invited me to do a short karate demo for their students. That one opportunity brought in several new families who ended up staying for years. I could call it preparation meeting opportunity—but I know there was luck in being asked at the right time, by the right person.
