Inspiring Conversations with Amir Kazim of Anderson Family & Cosmetic Dentisrty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amir Kazim.

Hi Amir, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up surrounded by dentistry—my earliest memories are of my mom’s dental office in downtown Toronto, where I watched her help patients smile again. That sparked something in me. Fast-forward a few decades, a few degrees, and a lot of coffee later, and I’m now a general dentist in Lake Forest, California, leading Anderson Family Dental.

Over the past ten years, my journey has blended clinical practice, auditing, and leadership. I’ve served as president of local dental societies, sat on councils at the CDA and ADA, and earned fellowships with the ICD, ACD, and Pierre Fauchard Academy. Alongside that, I’ve developed a second career as a dental auditor and teledentistry advocate, helping practices stay compliant while embracing technology to reach more patients.

What drives me today is connection—connecting people to care, dentists to purpose, and the next generation to leadership. Along the way, I’ve also found balance through my greatest roles yet: husband, father, and lifelong student of humor. Whether it’s running a busy practice, presenting at SmileCon, or chasing my toddler around Disneyland, I try to bring the same energy: curiosity, compassion, and a touch of wit.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not even close — but every bump built a better version of me.

In dental school, just as my dreams were taking shape, life handed me a curveball: a brain tumor diagnosis. I went from studying neuroanatomy to living it. Overnight, I went from the one learning how to care for patients to being the patient — scared, vulnerable, and uncertain of what tomorrow would bring.

The surgery and recovery were grueling, but they reshaped far more than my health — they transformed my perspective. I came back to dentistry not just with sharper clinical skills, but with a deeper sense of empathy. I had felt firsthand what it was like to sit in that chair, to trust someone with your wellbeing, to cling to small acts of kindness from your healthcare team.

That experience became the cornerstone of how I practice today. I don’t just fix teeth — I try to restore trust, ease fears, and remind patients that compassion is the best form of anesthesia.

Since then, the journey’s been anything but linear — balancing clinical practice, leadership, audits, and family life has had its share of chaos. But every challenge — every sleepless night, every setback — has reinforced my belief that resilience and kindness are the true hallmarks of healthcare.

The tumor may have left a scar, but it also gave me my purpose: to treat every patient as if they were the most important person in the world — because, in that moment, they are.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Anderson Family & Cosmetic Dentisrty?
About Anderson Family Dental: Where Smiles Meet Heart

At Anderson Family Dental, we like to say we’re in the business of fixing teeth — but really, we’re in the business of building trust. Our practice in Lake Forest is a modern, family-centered dental home where technology meets compassion. We blend advanced care with the warmth of a neighborhood clinic — the kind of place where you’re greeted by name, your story matters, and laughter is part of the treatment plan.

We specialize in comprehensive family and cosmetic dentistry, offering everything from same-day crowns and implant restorations to teledentistry consultations and wellness-based preventive care. What truly sets us apart, though, isn’t just what we do — it’s how we do it. Every member of our team believes dentistry should feel comfortable, transparent, and human.

As both a clinician and a dental auditor, I’ve seen what works — and what doesn’t — in hundreds of practices. That experience shaped our approach: meticulous documentation, honest conversations, and care that’s rooted in ethics and empathy. Patients often tell us they feel “seen” and “heard” here — and that’s the greatest compliment we could receive.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that our name carries more than dentistry — it carries a promise. A promise to treat every patient like family, to make even the most anxious visitor feel at home, and to show that excellence and empathy can coexist.

At the end of the day, our mission is simple: to help people smile confidently — in our chairs and in their lives. Whether it’s a child’s first visit, a nervous adult’s comeback appointment, or a patient connecting with us virtually through teledentistry, we want everyone to know they’re part of our story.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that success in dentistry — or life — is rarely a solo effort. Finding the right mentors has been the single most transformative part of my journey. I’ve been lucky to have incredible people guide me — from professors who believed in me after my brain tumor surgery, to dental society leaders who saw potential when I was still figuring out which handpiece to use.

My best advice? Don’t look for a mentor with the fanciest title — look for someone whose values align with yours. The right mentor doesn’t just teach you how to succeed; they teach you how to stay grounded while you do. Sometimes that person will push you, other times they’ll listen when you’re doubting yourself. Both moments matter.

Networking, for me, has never been about collecting business cards — it’s about collecting stories. I’ve found the best connections happen when you show up as yourself: curious, genuine, and willing to listen more than you talk. Whether it’s chatting in the hallway at a CDA meeting, volunteering at a Give Kids A Smile event, or laughing over bad dental puns at a local component mixer, every conversation is an opportunity to learn and give back.

If you want to grow your network, start by serving others — join a committee, mentor a student, or reach out to someone new in your society just to say “welcome.” When you give without expecting, you attract the right people into your orbit.

At the end of the day, mentorship isn’t about hierarchy — it’s about humanity. It’s one person saying to another: “I’ve been where you are, and I believe you can go further.
