Inspiring Conversations with Alejandro Cohen of Dublab

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandro Cohen.

Hi Alejandro, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a musician, composer and music producer based in Los Angeles. As a musician I was part of the bands Languis, Pharaohs and Psychic Powers. Currently I have my own project under Cafe Ale and a collaborative project called Ivory Fields. As a producer I can say that I been involved in virtually every facet of the music industry, from producing records to live events, installations, video, radio, and multimedia. Although I see myself first and foremost as a musician my main activities for the past several years have been around the radio station dublab, for which I am the Executive Director.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think there is such thing as a smooth road when you make a living out of your creative practices. I think if things were smooth, something is not right. Overall it has been conflict-free and I have been fortunate to find myself in a community that is positive and supportive, but more than being smooth or rough, it is an uncertain road.

We’ve been impressed with dublab, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
dublab cultivates and supports local cultural ecosystems worldwide. Through community-generated radio, dublab promotes curiosity, experimentation, inclusivity, and connection.

dublab is a non-profit radio station based in Los Angeles. Since 1999, we have been broadcasting wide-spectrum music from around the world. Our programming has expanded to include the production of original art exhibits, films, events record releases and educational programs related to health, youth, development, education and creative processes.

dublab broadcasts hundreds of radio programs hosted by some of the most talented DJs worldwide. Our DJs are empowered to freely play sounds they are passionate about, making each show distinct. Our “Future Roots” concept collapses time, space and genre to celebrate the continuum of creative music made by passionate people. Influential sounds of the past flow into the dynamic sounds of tomorrow. The dublab airwaves allow space for diverse styles, eras, genres and music cultures to co-exist. dublab is documenting the lineage of creative sound and accelerating its progress.

dublab presents live cultural experiences ranging from art exhibitions and film screenings to concerts and pop-up broadcasts. These events come to life in unique venues throughout Los Angeles and around the world as immersive sound and vision experiences dublab programs many signature annual events including our Anniversary Party, Creative Cultivation Salon, and Tonalism — an all-night ambient series.

dublab also has four affiliate stations around the world, the stations run independently from dublab US, however, we share the same values and mission and collaborate on various projects. The affiliate stations are based in Japan (Tokyo), Spain (Barcelona), Germany (Cologne), and Brazil (Sao Paulo)

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I always give credit to Mark “Frosty” McNeill for the opportunity of bringing me to dublab. His general approach to things have formed the way I do things. I am also very grateful for the staff at dublab. Rachel Day, our Programming Director, pushes me to be better at what we do and provides a perspective on things that I rarely have.
