Hi Adroushan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was on a flight a year ago when I noticed an attractive young woman sitting in the row in front of me. I was travelling to a new city, knew no one there, and wanted to talk to her. But I also didn’t want all of American Airlines hearing the conversation.
So I did nothing and justified it by thinking “what’re the odds she’s cool too?” A couple hours into the flight, she takes out an iPad and starts sketching. She was a fashion designer. Now, she was not only attractive but interesting too…. why couldn’t she pull out an Excel sheet and do accounting.
I had to do something but I didn’t quite know what. Then I had what I thought was a brilliant idea… what if I open a contact page on my phone and just hand it to her. Bold. A little too bold.
So I put my phone away and did nothing. But the regret led to thinking… this happens ALL the time!
People catch our attention, we wanna do something about it, but never do. Then we miss the moment.
But I was onto something with the contact page… what if you could do this, without the pressure? Kind of like Airdropping the people around you.
And so the idea of Drop was born. And that one flight made me quit my 6 figure job to build a world where no one misses their chance again. Where friends, dates, connections are just a tap away.
Within a few months, we put a team together and started working towards this future.
Fast forward and thousands of people are now using what started as a mere idea on a plane exactly one year ago!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road worth traveling is smooth!
We built the solution for a very trending problem… go on social media and I guarantee you within a few scrolls you’ll see a video about the very issue we’re solving for. Whether it’s a story time of a missed connection, frustration with the lack of meeting people, or overall annoyance of how hard it is to approach people “in the wild”.
And despite having the solution to a very trending topic, getting word out about anything new is always going to be an uphill battle.
It’s been a really interesting process of having creative ideas, testing them, and finding what works. And within that there’s been lots of failures but we’re fortunate to have found many successes too and scaled our growth rate tremendously to over 77% MoM
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When people think of a “company” they often think of a huge, suited up organization with lots of people, lots of bureaucracy, and lots of money. And what’s funny is I think a lot of people just starting off try to emulate this stereotype.
We’re the exact opposite and actually take pride in that. We’re just a few young people that had a crazy idea and have committed our entire life for the last year to making it happen. And I think there’s beauty in that.
We built something that we would use. That our friends would use. And that all the people we know would love to use. We are our target customer. And I think this gives us an edge that keeps us close to our mission and our users.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
With the rise of AI and all the technological advancements happening today, there is so much that will be changing in the behaviors and needs of a company’s customers in almost every industry.
But the fundamental need that Drop solves for is human connection. And that’s something that will never go away.
Think of your best memories from the past year. I can guarantee you every single one of them was with other people by your side.
People and connection are the center of our lives and the unfortunate reality is that as technology advances, it becomes harder and harder to connect in the real world and in real places.
If anything, there will be an even bigger need for Drop in the next 5-10 years.
