Inspiring Conversations with Kayla Croft of Goodekind

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Croft.

Hi Kayla, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started Goodekind, a family-owned hemp company with a focus on social impact, with my brother-in-law Flip in 2018. Prior to that, I had built a career in the recording arts, first as a sound engineer recording music in Austin, TX, and later as sound mixer for film and TV, which prompted my move to Los Angeles.

Achieving success in such a difficult industry and creating that career from scratch really set me up for Goodekind as far as building a company from the ground up and managing finances. As fate would have it, my first friends in LA were in the legal cannabis industry. I always looked at what they were doing and thought, “I’d love to do that someday.” Flip and I were at similar points in our lives, in which we thought our current careers just weren’t satisfying enough. We wanted to make a living doing something we love, and we wanted that to include giving back and actually helping save lives. Goodekind is committed to diversifying the industry by sourcing our quality hemp products from minority or woman-owned businesses. We also donate a portion of our profits to human rights initiatives.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There have been tons of obstacles along the way! First off, our original dream was to be in the legal cannabis industry in California, but that proved to have a lot of red tapes and required more capital than we had. It has also proven difficult to find products from minority- and women-owned businesses. And lastly, it’s hard to constantly R&D products between myself and Flip since I live in LA and he lives in Dallas. We spend a lot of time at the post office!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Goodekind is a family-owned hemp company with a focus on social impact. What sets us apart from other hemp companies is that we donate a portion of our profits to human rights initiatives while also sourcing our quality hemp products from minority or woman-owned businesses. I run a lot of the operations and production sides of things, as well as finances, while Flip (my brother-in-law) is the creative behind the whole thing and runs our entire web store. But ultimately, we both have to wear many hats. I am most proud of our purpose, our ambitious goals to diversify the industry, and the beautiful branding that Flip has created. We currently offer three strains of hemp flower, a CBD vape cartridge, a Delta-8 vape cartridge, a CBG crumble, a CBG topical, and two different kinds of CBD tinctures. The Delta-8 products are definitely the newest hype, and we will have Delta-8 gummies coming very soon. You can find us at our favorite local CBD store, LACBD or at our website www.goodekind.com.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
When you have a business partner, communication is key. My biz partner happens to be my family so this is usually pretty easy. Otherwise, perseverance is the most important thing to keep up with. You will inevitably come across obstacles and there will be days when you just want to give up. But you gotta keep going! You never know when your time will come!
