Today we’d like to introduce you to Danny and Tenesia Pascal.
Hi Danny and Tenesia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We both grew up with our hands in the soil, freedom was always a calling, it’s as if it’s written into our DNA. On two different sides of the world, we both found freedom in nature, in fantasies of living our lives out in tree houses unbothered by the modern structures of society. Alas things changed and we grew up. I (Tenesia) moved to England and met Danny a few years after and the rest is history. Growing up, I always loved climbing trees, fishing and spending as much time as possible in my backyard or the neighbor’s backyard, playing with my siblings and gardening with my grandmother. We had a few animals; I named my calf Gertrude (I know such a great name). Outside is where I found freedom, where I felt like I could be myself. Talking to trees and climbing them to pick anything I wanted to eat was the best thing ever.
Outside was my safe place, nature was my home. When I moved to England, I lost that, that connection to the earth, to myself, to my freedom. I (Danny) always had this dream to be a hermit and live out in the middle of nature with no one around me. Strange dream for a child from a city like London to have but it’s stayed with me my entire life. I guess part of that connection came from when I was a teenager when I used to help my mum plant food and flowers at her allotment. She gave me this calling without even knowing it but I guess that’s what parents do. Our connection to nature can never be broken but it can be suppressed by living in big cities and not giving ourselves enough time to really just BE. Be at one with nature and take time to know ourselves. That yearning to be free isn’t geographical but a mindset. One that we hold onto everyday when bringing to life the Earth to Earth Organics dream. “Each one teach one” as they say, because if can bring ourselves that peace of mind then we want to bring that peace of mind to you too. We really got more connected after we got married in 2014 and embarked on a plant-based journey in our diets and lifestyles, cutting out meat, fish and dairy, firstly for health reasons and then ethical ones.
We don’t like to preach; this was just a personal decision we made and two years later, we came up with the concept for Earth to Earth Organics together in 2016. These products were created out of necessity by Tenesia who at the time had developed health and skin problems following her relocation to England from Guyana. The change in climate, hardness of the water and processed food had led to rashes all over her body. We couldn’t find anything in the market that was cost-effective and pure. This took Tenesia on a journey of research and experimenting with different products until she found a winner in our most loved body butter called “Magic Cream”. We spent two years proving our concept, testing and reviewing with friends and family and soon realized we were onto something special when our nephew, who suffers with eczema, tried some of our body butter and it helped clear up his skin. He coined it ‘auntie’s magic cream’ and our first product “Magic Body Butter’ was born.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Knowing how to run a business. We knew there would be a regulatory aspect, given we are in the skincare business. However, there was a lot more to learn about running a business, such as finance and marketing. It was a steep learning curve for us, which involved talking to experienced people, research and then implementing best practices. We both have backgrounds in customer services, so we knew how to deal with customer issues and queries when they arose. However, everything else has been new to us. For example, we didn’t know that when labeling a product, you have to use the scientific names of all ingredients used. Although it has been challenging, we have learnt a lot along the way.
As you know, we’re big fans of Earth To Earth Organics. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
When we changed our diet, we became more conscious about environmental issues. We started understanding more about the natural environment around us and realized this was our passion. As such, as part of our ethos, we plant trees with ‘One Tree Planted’, we are helping clean up plastics through our partnership with ‘Clean Hub’ and in Guyana we help children who have lost their parents by supporting them through school. These activities as well as our products reinforce our focus and passion for environmental sustainability. Earth to Earth Organics is an environmentally conscious alternative to chemical- containing skincare products that are widely available on the high street. The company’s body butters do not contain water, thus providing the rawest and most natural product and experience to customers.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
We don’t use any chemicals, chemical preservatives and additives in our products. Our products have no age limit, so anyone can use them, you just need to have skin. We believe this makes us stand out in the market. Aside from our products, sustainability is something that is very important to us. You can see this for example in our packaging, which is 90% plastic-free. We also partner with Clean hub, to clean up plastic waste in some of the most deprived places in the world. This, I believe also makes us unique from other skin care brands.
