Hidden Gems: Meet Troy Krueger of Astra Black

Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy Krueger.

Hi Troy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had this restless ambition — the kind that kept me awake at night, sketching out ideas on scraps of paper and chasing visions that felt bigger than me. But ambition without patience can be dangerous. I used to want the skyscraper without ever laying the bricks. I thought vision alone could carry me, and when it didn’t, I learned some painful lessons.

I’m a recovering perfectionist. For years, I thought if it wasn’t flawless, it wasn’t worth doing. I obsessed over details that didn’t matter yet, built entire blueprints before laying a foundation, and burned myself out trying to make every move look effortless. That mindset held me back more than failure ever did.

The truth is, my path has been anything but straight. I didn’t go the traditional route — I didn’t step right into university after high school, it was almost a decade later before I circled back. I’ve started and stopped more times than I can count. I’ve chased opportunities that looked promising and watched them dissolve overnight. I’ve carried the weight of decisions that nearly broke me, and I’ve had to wake up more than once and ask myself, ‘Do I still have it in me to try again?’ Every time, the answer was yes — even if it took a while to get there.

What’s been constant is that entrepreneurial fire, long before I even had the language for it. I’ve always been a builder, a dreamer, an extreme visionary. My head is full of ideas — sometimes too many — and there have been seasons where the flood of creativity pulled me in a dozen directions at once. I’ve learned the hard way that vision without discipline can scatter your energy, but vision with the right team can move mountains. That’s why I’ve worked to grow as a leader and surround myself with integrators — people who can take the chaos of my imagination and help ground it into systems, structure, and execution.

Along the way, I’ve picked up a wealth of experience across industries that shaped me — entertainment, events, film, music, the arts. Each one taught me something different: how to tell a story, how to move an audience, how to manage projects with precision, how to balance creativity with business strategy. These aren’t just skills to me, they’re passions. They’ve given me the perspective to not just imagine what could be, but to actually bring it to life.

Astra Black came out of that tension. Out of the frustration of giving away my best energy to build other people’s dreams while mine sat untouched. Out of the realization that the difference between success and failure isn’t the size of your vision — it’s your ability to execute it, to show up when you’re tired, to keep laying bricks when no one’s watching, to move forward when every reason says you should quit.

That’s why Astra Black isn’t just another creative agency to me. It’s the culmination of every failure, every restart, every lesson I had to learn the long way. It’s proof that I didn’t quit, even when it would’ve been easier to. And it’s my answer to the gap I’ve seen my whole life — the gap between ideas and impact, between talk and execution, between what people dream and what they actually build.

My story isn’t neat, and it’s definitely not finished. But if there’s one thing it’s taught me, it’s this: ideas are everywhere. The rare thing — the thing that changes everything — is the courage to commit, to lead, and to execute. And that’s the path I’m on now, unapologetically.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road? Not even close. My journey has been full of detours, setbacks, and lessons I had to learn the hard way. I’ve failed at projects I thought were bulletproof. I’ve put years into ideas that never saw the light of day. I’ve battled my own perfectionism — overthinking, overbuilding, waiting for the ‘perfect’ moment that never comes.

One of my biggest challenges has been managing vision. I’m an extreme visionary, which means I see possibility everywhere. But too much vision without focus can be just as destructive as not having any at all. There were times I tried to build ten skyscrapers at once and ended up with ten unfinished foundations. Learning to narrow in, to prioritize, and to let go of the fear of missing out — that’s been a constant battle.

The other challenge has been building credibility without a traditional path. I didn’t step right into university after high school, I came at it almost a decade later. I don’t have the neat résumé some people expect. And when you don’t have a track record, you don’t get a lot of handouts. Investors don’t line up. Clients don’t immediately trust you. You have to build that trust brick by brick, proving yourself over and over.

But here’s the flip side: those obstacles shaped me. They forced me to grow as a leader, to surround myself with integrators, to get smarter about execution, to double down on resilience. Every struggle taught me something I couldn’t have learned any other way. And in hindsight, the road wasn’t supposed to be smooth — the friction is what gave me the grit I needed to keep going.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Astra Black isn’t a traditional agency — it’s a collective of extreme visionaries and problem solvers who see connections where others see walls. We thrive at the intersection of entertainment, arts, media, and events — industries that demand both creativity and execution at the highest level.

What sets us apart is the way we think. Anyone can run ads or design a logo. Our strength is in pulling threads together — strategy, story, design, experience — and weaving them into something that actually moves culture. We don’t just ask ‘what’s the deliverable?’ — we ask ‘what does this brand need to become in order to lead?’ That perspective changes everything.

I’m most proud of the creativity of our team and the way we can connect ideas that most people would never put in the same room. We approach projects like puzzles with missing pieces, and somehow, we’re able to find the patterns others overlook. That ability — to connect, to reframe, to execute — is what makes Astra Black different.

And it’s not just surface-level creativity. We go deep. If we don’t already know a client’s brand, product, service, or industry, we immerse ourselves until we do. We dig into research, analysis, education, and resourcing — not just to understand the brand, but to think like it. That’s where our extreme intuitiveness comes in: being able to sense what a brand needs before it’s obvious, to anticipate opportunities and pitfalls that others would miss.

In terms of what we do: Astra Black specializes in brand storytelling, campaign strategy, experiential marketing, transmedia storytelling, and project management at scale. That means we don’t just create visuals or messaging — we build ecosystems. A client might come to us because they’re launching a new brand and need more than a logo — they need an identity, a narrative, and a full strategy to make it land with impact. Another client might be preparing a global event or campaign and needs someone who can manage the story, design, and execution across digital, social, and live platforms. Or it could be a CEO who’s lost creative direction and needs us to reimagine their brand and bring clarity back to the table.

If there’s one thing I’d want readers to know about Astra Black, it’s this: we’re not here to compete with agencies that play it safe. We’re here for the bold ones, the visionaries, the people who understand that culture doesn’t wait. For them, we bring the kind of creativity and execution that doesn’t just keep up with the times — it sets the pace. If you’re ready to build something that actually pushes boundaries, we’re the team you call.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
No one builds anything meaningful alone, and I’m no exception. I’ve had people in my corner who’ve pushed me, challenged me, and kept me moving when quitting would’ve been the easier option.

Mentorship has come in different forms. Some were direct — people who gave me hard truths when I needed them most. Others were more indirect — leaders, artists, entrepreneurs whose work I studied and whose mindset helped me see what was possible.

I’ve also been lucky to have collaborators and teammates who brought their creativity and energy into Astra Black. The truth is, the strength of this agency isn’t just me — it’s the collective brilliance of the people I surround myself with. They’re the ones who can take my vision and ground it, expand it, and bring it into the world with precision.

Astra Black wouldn’t be what it is without the people I’ve been fortunate enough to build alongside. Brandon has been my creative counterpart — a partner who brings depth and imagination that constantly pushes our work further. Armah is a powerhouse of experience and relationships in entertainment, someone who knows how to connect vision with culture. AJ brings sharpness in production, making sure ideas don’t just stay on paper but come alive flawlessly.

I also owe credit to people outside the core leadership who’ve influenced me. Connie has been a steady supporter and sounding board through the ups and downs. Richard has shown me the value of consistency and wisdom over time, modeling what it means to build a legacy. And Russ — one of my closest friends — has been in the trenches with me more times than I can count, the kind of person who shows up no matter how heavy the lift.

And I can’t forget the supporters who believed in me before there was anything to show. The friends, peers, and even early clients who took a chance on me, who validated the idea that Astra Black could be more than a concept — they gave me the spark to keep going.

So if there’s credit to give, it goes to the people who believed, the ones who challenged, and the ones who continue to build this with me.
