Hidden Gems: Meet Trevor Young of Bloop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevor Young

Hi Trevor, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been a residential real estate appraiser for 15 years with some success. I have always wanted to have my own brand though. Something that I could say was mine and created by me. After my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago we started looking at ways to live a more healthy life. We began to clean out our house of products that were harmful and discovered that laundry detergent is one of the most harmful products to people, animals and the environment. With two young boys at home and a focus on living a healthier lifestyle, I created Bloop laundry soap. My business partner, our wives, and I started digging into the harmful effects of most laundry detergents and started developing our own laundry soaps. We are a small batch, eco-friendly laundry soap with amazing scents you won’t find in other similar type of laundry products.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Haha, it has most definitely not been a smooth road, but that’s part of the fun! Starting a small business is a struggle in today’s landscape of social media and online marketplaces. The first hurdle my business partner and I had was developing our laundry soap recipe so that it would be effective on dirt while using natural ingredients. We were literally making batches of laundry soap on our kitchen counter tops while cooking family dinners.

The next step, and arguably the hardest, was working with a scent manufacturer to remove many of the harmful ingredients used in scent manufacturing and making the scents eco-friendly as well. That was a huge challenge, but the outcome is amazing. Our scented soaps won’t harm any watersheds or wildlife they come into contact with, all while being well below any threshold for personal use set by the International Fragrance Association.

Finally came the manufacturing process. We are small batch and we make the laundry soaps in-house, as well as fill our cartons ourselves. And we’ve been doing all of this while holding down jobs, being present with our families, and coaching our kids’ sports teams.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Bloop?
We are a small batch, eco-friendly laundry soap with crafted scents that smells amazing! My business partner and I make our natural laundry soap in-house by hand, bottle the product in-house, and do all of the shipping as well. We are truly a hands on company. We focus on a healthy lifestyle without smelling like lavender and patchouli. Nothing against those scents, but we believe that there needs to be more scents available to the consumer. We pride ourselves on being eco-friendly. Our formula is watershed safe, eco-friendly, cruelty-free, and comes in a recyclable carton with a minimized plastic footprint.

I originally went to school to study plant biology and have always had a passion for environmental issues.
