Hidden Gems: Meet Shemena Johnson of Dr. Shemena Johnson Psychotherapy, Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shemena Johnson.

Hi Shemena, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For me, getting here has meant doing the deep work of really seeing myself. I had to let go of the versions of me that were shaped by other people’s expectations — the one who stayed quiet, who kept the peace, who carried everyone else’s feelings but her own. It took heartbreak, silence, and a lot of reflection to realize that healing isn’t about going back — it’s about becoming. Once I stopped looking for validation and started trusting my own voice, things began to shift. I became clearer, steadier, and more rooted in myself.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. The hardest part was learning to stay rooted in myself when everything around me was changing. There were seasons of doubt, loss, and a lot of unlearning — moments where I had to let go of people, patterns, and expectations that no longer fit who I was becoming. At times, I mistook stillness for failure or silence for disconnection, but those moments taught me resilience. They reminded me that growth isn’t linear and that healing often happens quietly, in the in-between spaces.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Dr. Shemena Johnson Psychotherapy, Inc.?
I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in Los Angeles, where I help adults and couples navigate the complexities of anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, and relationship challenges. I hold degrees in Clinical Psychology from California State University, Los Angeles, and Antioch University, and I continued advanced training at the Psychoanalytic Center of California before earning my doctorate in Marriage and Family Counseling.

My professional journey, shaped by both clinical experience and my identity as a Black woman, has taught me that true healing must honor the individual soul as well as the familial, societal, and cultural context that shapes it. Over the years, I’ve worked with people from all walks of life—and what I’ve learned is that growth happens when we bring curiosity, courage, and compassion to the places that hurt the most.

I approach therapy as both science and soul work: a collaborative process where awareness, connection, and possibility can emerge, even from the most difficult places of life.

What does success mean to you?
For me, success isn’t about status or recognition — it’s about alignment. It’s when your private identity aligns with your public persona. It’s the quiet confidence that comes from living with integrity, loving deeply, and being honest with yourself.
