Today we’d like to introduce you to Sai Lockett.
Hi Sai, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up as the unkempt kid of a single mother battling addiction, I was bullied for my messy hair and outdated clothes. By 10, I’d had enough—I taught myself to braid, practicing on classmates and cousins. That skill became my lifeline, funding my teens and college years (yes, I did hair out of my dorm while studying public health at Indiana University).
After moving to LA, I took a break—until 2020 hit. When COVID shut down studios, a friend asked me to do her daughter’s hair. Word spread fast, and soon I was booked for house calls. But there was a problem: clients loved my work except for the itchy, irritating braiding hair. So I dug deeper—testing samples, partnering with manufacturers to get the formula right—and created Lockett Hair: ethically sourced, scalp-friendly braiding hair materials. Now, even the most sensitive scalps can confidently wear their installs.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This journey has been everything but smooth. Entrepreneurship is all about ebbs and flows—some wins, some “Well, I didn’t see that coming” moments. The biggest lesson? You can’t plan for everything, and that’s not failure—it’s just part of the game. Every stumble teaches you something new.
My first major struggle? Figuring out how to legally and correctly outsource a product. Between money, manufacturers, regulations, and quality control, there was a lot of trial and error. But those hurdles? They forced me to learn fast. Now, every challenge just adds to the story.
As you know, we’re big fans of Lockett Hair LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Lockett Hair provides clean, scalp-friendly braiding materials to women across LA—no itch, no irritation, just quality. I sell the hair and use it exclusively in my services, so clients skip the store runs and trust their installs from start to finish.
What sets us apart? Ethical sourcing meets real need. I created what my clients deserved—hair that cares as much as their stylist does.
Brand-wise? I’m proud of how far Lockett’s grown. What started as a mustard seed idea is now in hands (and on heads) across the city. Grateful doesn’t even cover it. Every order, every install—it’s proof that when you solve a real problem, people see the vision.
We offer premium braiding hair for purchase on our website, exclusive hair apparel (with limited drops), and internationally sourced raw virgin hair—all designed for flawless, scalp-friendly installs.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Lockett wasn’t built alone. From friends (my first canvases) to clients, mentors, and cheerleaders—each played a part. My circle pushes me to see value I overlook, while mentors (shoutout to TK for the endless business mentorship and being an amazing blueprint amazing ) keep me sharp, offering real biz wisdom from their own journeys.
Special love to Hope, who saw the artist in me before I did, and Torrie, who lit the fire under me to get started in LA. And of course, my clients—thank you for trusting me with your crowns. This brand is ours.
