Hidden Gems: Meet Molly Devenney of Local Kidz Crew

Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Devenney.

Hi Molly, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My husband is a lineman and I have two children Havyn who is 4 years old and our son Colson who is 1 year old. This all started with an idea back when we had our son Colson in 2021. My husband wanted our son in clothes that he would wear but every time I would search for certain brands, nothing would come in his size. Usually, streetwear clothes only come in youth sizes. This got me thinking, I can’t be the only mom having this issue. Then of course, I wanted our daughter to match her brother but there was no clothing brand that had the vibe I was looking for. My idea was basically to have a similar vibe like RVCA, Santa Cruz, Vans, etc. and make it for ages three months all the way up to youth XL.

Next, we needed a name. This was harder than I had anticipated. I wanted something that represented our family but also represents the hard-working moms, dads and families out there. My husband is a lineman, which we take extreme pride in. This too was the inspiration behind the brand. Lineman, construction, most utility and trade workers are part of the local and of course, the “bolt” represents electricity. So, we decided to create this edgy kid’s clothing brand called Local Kidz Crew. We are a family that loves the outdoors whether it be the desert, beaches, rivers… it doesn’t matter where. You will find us in California ripping our dirt bikes, camping, snowboarding, skateboarding, etc. We enjoy having a good time while being around family & friends. This is what we wanted to incorporate our brand around. This is a family and we wanted others to be a part of it.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth? starting a business is never smooth. At least for me, it wasn’t. Trying to juggle being a mom and also create this brand was one of the hardest things for me. Being a full-time stay-at-home mom means I had to do mom duties during the day and work on Local Kidz Crew during nap times or wait till they went to sleep and work at night. Luckily I had my husband help me with the kids once he got home from work. The business side my Mother & Father in law have been so supportive through this entire process and I really wouldn’t be where I am today without those two, They have been with me through the struggles and the wins and have taught me everything I know.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The one thing I want my brand to be known for is “this isn’t your typical children’s clothing store”. You’re going to find lots of skulls, dirt bikes, skateboarding, lightening bolts, checkered, etc. It’s edgy and definitely not your average kid clothing brand but that’s what I love about it. I’ve had parents tell me their kids loved the shirts so much they wouldn’t take It off. Everything we put into our store I would 100% have my kids wear. But I also make sure before I design anything I always ask my husband…would you wear this? If he says no I won’t put it on a shirt. Simple as that. My design team & I work really hard to make sure each design is absolutely epic. The thing I’m most proud of is seeing the kids in our brand. When someone sends me a picture that absolutely makes my day. In my eyes I am already winning, I am already successful. This is what I wanted. To create this edgy kid brand but also wanted to create a crew. Every single person who purchases a shirt is a part of my crew and I couldn’t more thankful. Just know when you are buying from us every single order I put my heart into it. I’ve only been doing this for 6 months but I promise every month it will get better. I’m just getting started.

What are your plans for the future?
I have big plans for the future… My ten years goal is for my clothing brand to be in Tillys. I know every clothing brand has to put in their work. And that’s what I’m going to do. But right now I am just enjoying the process and appreciating every win I have.
