Today we’d like to introduce you to Mercedes Van Pelt.
Hi Mercedes, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born at the South Bay Hospital in Redondo Beach and grew up in West Torrance, so I have lived in almost all of the South Bay Cities over my lifetime. I became a Real Estate Agent over 16 years ago when my second child was born with disabilities, and I needed more flexibility with my work schedule. I had always wanted to be a Real Estate Agent after watching how owning real estate changed my parents’ lives. I grew up in a household that would be considered lower-middle-class, with parents who scraped, borrowed, and even lied on their loan application to buy their first single-family home in Torrance to raise their five children. After building significant equity in that home, my parents refinanced, pulled money out, and bought an investment property in Lawndale. Over the course of their lives, my parents bought several investment properties and retired with a very nice lifestyle! So I know, deep in my bones, that real estate really does change a person’s financial future and I love being a part of that for others.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Becoming a successful Real Estate Agent is very difficult and takes a lot of hard work. I often work 10 to 12 hours a day and sometimes work for weeks at a time without a day off. And then there are other times where business is slow, and you’re not sure when or where the next paycheck will come from. It takes a lot of self-motivation, tireless effort, and extensive research into multiple facets of the business to stay on top. But I love that this business is always teaching me something new, and no two days are alike!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I believe that buying or selling a home is one of the most important events in anyone’s life. Because of that, I know how important it is to be trustworthy, a market expert, and someone who can strongly negotiate on behalf of my clients. People trust me with one of their largest assets, and I take that very seriously. I strive to provide honesty, integrity, hard work, and follow-through in every real estate transaction, and my clients often speak to my level of communication. I offer a myriad of services that are clearly outlined and reviewed throughout the sales process so that my clients have the confidence to make the best decisions possible at each step in the process. Couple this with having been born and raised in the South Bay. I have an extensive knowledge of the area, and I’m an expert on local neighborhoods. This provides my clients with information they can’t find anywhere else!
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I absolutely love the South Bay and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in the world. We have the best weather, the beautiful Pacific Ocean, tons of outdoor activities, and access to incredible entertainment in the way of theater, music, and art. The only thing that is challenging about our area is the cost of living. Because it is so fabulous, everyone wants to be here which makes it a very expensive place to live.
