Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Isario.
Hi Martha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my journey as a Postpartum Doula and NCS (Newborn Care Specialist) 5 years ago here in the USA, but really it began in Mexico when I was working at the hospital. Over there, I had my first encounter with a newborn, and it was a magical and spiritual experience for me. The joy I had working with newborns was unmatched. It was truly my calling. After having three babies of my own, I fell in love with being a mom and taking care of children in general. I decided to be a stay-at-home mom, and when my kids grew up, I chose to work in a related field. Later on, I took a training in Home Support Services, and that was when I heard the term “Doula,” which caught my attention. I did my own research and finally decided to take a training course, which I enjoyed and loved. That was the start of my story, and many more trainings and connections followed, leading to my support of families in those first months with a newborn.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I started this journey, it was challenging because I did not know many people in the field. It took me a while to get in touch with more doulas and gain connections. Another challenge was the distance I had to drive in the beginning. Most of the families that needed support were in LA, and I live in the Inland Empire. It was challenging to drive an hour and a half or two to get to my destination and then drive back. Little by little, I started getting families closer to my home, which made the experience easier.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Sweet Dreams Doula and Baby Care, we support families in those first few months after having a newborn at home. It is an exciting and sometimes overwhelming experience, but it is all truly worth it. There are many services that I offer. Those include nighttime care, breastfeeding support, sleep shaping, and overall care for the needs of the baby and mother. I know that having an experienced, trained, caring person to guide and encourage you makes a big difference in the daily activities of family life. I am known for being a great support system for the family, whether that be physical or mental support. What sets me apart from others is my own experience, personally and professionally. As a mother of three kids, you learn so much and gain knowledge from your own kids. Apart from that, I have a background in working with babies from back in Mexico, so that knowledge has also helped me tremendously. What I am most proud of is implementing sleep shaping with newborns. This service has made families feel more confident and reassured that they are doing their best for their baby.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was an outing I had with my family. I was just a kid at the time, and my parents decided to take my siblings and me to the park for a picnic. It was a warm day, the sky was clear, and the flowers were blooming. I do not remember what we had to eat, but I do remember my parents laughing and smiling as they talked to my siblings and me. I learned how to ride a bike that day, and I felt like the happiest person ever. That day was filled with joy and laughter, and it is one of the few memories I have of my family all together.
