Hidden Gems: Meet Mark Spearman of Spearman Clubs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Spearman.

Hi Mark, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Cecil and our family purchased the club in 1984, and it’s been a true family business ever since. Mark was still traveling and competing on tour for the next four years before joining his father, Cecil, as a tennis professional and later becoming Tennis Director in 1990.
Now serving as Tennis Director and CEO, Mark took over operations in 2000—growing the club from 500 to over 1,500 memberships, expanding to 70+ league teams, hosting three junior tennis programs, and introducing pickleball.
The club also offers fitness programs for elite athletes, as well as yoga and Pilates for those seeking balance and wellness. We’ve built a true one-stop, family-owned club where you can come as you are, feel at home, and reach the goals that brought you here.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any business, there have been ups and downs along the way. One of our biggest challenges has been keeping pace with the ever-evolving world of tennis and wellness. We’re not a “trend-following” club — instead, you’ll always find the classics done right at Laguna Niguel Racquet Club and Tennis Club at Monarch Beach.
Tennis itself has gone through waves of popularity over the years. In the 1980s, racquetball dominated before taking a back seat to tennis. Then in the 2000s, golf surged while tennis slowed down, and we had to get creative to keep our members engaged and active. Now, pickleball is nipping at tennis’s heels — so we embraced it, adding new courts and programs — but tennis remains our tried and true.
Spearman Clubs has truly stood the test of time. Thanks to our incredible members, we’ve weathered every shift — including the challenges of COVID, when we found new ways to keep our community connected even while the courts were closed.
Today, we’ve not only rebounded but are busier and stronger than ever, continuing to do what we do best: creating a welcoming, family-run space where tennis, fitness, and community come together.

As you know, we’re big fans of Spearman Clubs . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We’re proud to be known for having some of the best adult tennis players in Orange County, with more than 70 active league teams competing year-round. Our junior programs are equally strong, offering everything from elite UTR-level training for nationally ranked players to junior team tennis for developing athletes. Beyond tennis, our fitness center has become a hub for both high-level training and everyday wellness — a place where members can lift, stretch, recover, and connect.
What truly sets us apart is that we’re a family-owned and operated business, and have been since 1984 in this area. Many of our staff and pros have been with us for over 20 years, which means the relationships here run deep — members aren’t just clients; they’re part of our extended family. We’ve created a niche as a classic, community-driven club where you’re always greeted by familiar faces and supported in reaching your goals, on and off the court.
Brand-wise, we’re most proud that we’ve stayed true to our roots. We don’t chase every fitness or wellness trend — we stand firmly on tradition, consistency, and quality. You’ll always find tennis, pickleball, and fitness programs that prioritize substance over flash, all delivered in a warm, welcoming environment.
At Spearman Clubs, we believe wellness should feel natural and accessible. Our philosophy is simple: come as you are, enjoy a one-stop destination for fitness, tennis, swim and wellness, and be part of a community that values living local, staying active, and truly loving where you belong.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see big shifts and changing in the young people coming back to get really involved in tennis again. Now that they are having families and coming back to this lifetime sport. Seeing a lot of young people coming back to tennis and also a lot of new adult tennis players, 2.0-2.5 players and I think that is going to keep growing.

I also see Padel taking off in this industry and would love to be apart of that boom.
