Hidden Gems: Meet Maria Oveysi Moe Kamal of Kinrose Creamery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Oveysi Moe Kamal.

Maria, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Given our Persian and Egyptian backgrounds, we wanted to share flavors that raised us and continue to inspire us. It all started from the Saffron Ice Cream recipe by Maria’s mom. We immediately thought, how can we package this traditional recipe and make it familiar for everyone? From that simple idea, we continued to experiment with different recipes and ingredients that were staples in our households including; Baklava, Cardamom Tea (Chai Tea) and Sour Cherry (Albaloo).

We started with a small kitchen in DTLA and a single goal: To introduce these vibrant flavors to anyone willing to try. With LA’s rich food culture and long affinity for ice cream, it was the ideal place to launch our creamery.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting and operating Kinrose during the pandemic came with supply chain issues and continuous instability. Obtaining permits and licenses became challenging at times due to the strict dairy laws of California.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Kinrose Creamery?
We take pleasure in creating flavors that are traditionally enjoyed throughout the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions. Think Cardamom or Saffron, a spice as expensive as gold!

Combining different spices and essences to create flavors that spark childhood nostalgia is what we’re most proud of.

We knew starting a creamery in the city of LA would be an exciting venture. Being well-received in this diverse city is the (sour) cherry on top! (A pun on our must-try flavor: Sour Cherry and Cream!)

What’s next?
Yes! Look out for us in more gourmet stores and local food markets…maybe even a physical location very soon!
