Hi Lei, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My husband and I stomped into a bar in Temecula, and they served beer from a classic car. We thought that was so cool. During the conversation with the owner, we found out that there might be another one for sale in Bakersfield. My husband jokingly asked me: “Do you want to get it?”. He thought that would be an instant “No”. I asked, instead, “How much?”. He went, ” $xx”. 30 seconds later, I went “Sure, let do it”.

My husband is realtor and I am in the event management and community engagement industry. We have done so many events together, from a luxury open house to TEDxSanMarino, from community events to donor appreciation galas… We recognized the value of the business (a mobile bar service with a classic car).

Since then, we got connected with the previous owner and we drove up to Bakersfield from Pasadena twice to check out the car and to do an event together with them. We became friends with the beautiful and supportive family.

When starting the business, I wanted to give it a “character”. I asked ChatGPT, researched and researched, and proposed so many names to each other. We didn’t feel any of it. One random search about the car, we had an enlightening moment: Why not HENRY, as in HENRY FORD?!. There comes MR HENRY!

Together, we have 3 jobs, 4 businesses. And now we are adding to another one in a completely new industry. It is challenging but also exciting. Within the 3 months since we launched the business, we already built up relationships with multiple partners, including The Langham Pasadena, the Zimmerman Classic Car Museum and we just served a 500 – people event at the Beverly Center, as well as private dinner events at the estate that used to belong to Erika Jayne.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To some extent, it was an impulsive purchase. It literally took us less than a minute to make the decision.

However, bring it to life has been challenging! Given we both have full time jobs, it is hard to give MR HENRY the full attention he deserves. I am happy that people love him. When it comes to event, it takes a lot of labor on our “off” days. Also, getting into hospitality, it requires some time to streamline the process, including setting up the business, ordering supplies, staffing, managing finances…
