Hidden Gems: Meet Lallaine Gayton of Simple Step Bookkeeping

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lallaine Gayton.

Hi Lallaine, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Before founding Simple Step, I spent years in the corporate world, driving results for large companies and wealthy stakeholders. But what truly struck me wasn’t what was happening in boardrooms—it was what I saw happening outside of them. I met countless small business owners—passionate, gifted people—juggling full-time jobs while trying to build something of their own. Their skill and dedication were undeniable, but many lacked the financial clarity and confidence that good bookkeeping and accounting can provide.

That’s when the idea clicked: What if I could make bookkeeping simple, approachable, and accessible for small business owners who have zero background in finance?

What started as casual, mutual learning conversations soon became a mission. I realized how much I loved translating complex accounting concepts into something that actually made sense to creative entrepreneurs, service providers, and side-hustlers. These weren’t just business chats—they were grounded in mutual respect, professionalism, and a shared desire to grow.

With the support of my husband Charles—my partner, encourager, and the spark behind this dream—I finally took the leap. It wasn’t without fear, but I leaned into my faith. Through prayer, community, and the guidance of Jesus, the right doors kept opening. I found a circle of inspiring women who gave me the confidence to go all in. That’s when Simple Step Bookkeeping truly came to life.

Today, I stand firmly rooted in faith, integrity, and service. I’m proud of the brand we’ve built—one that connects with the right clients, values transparency, and brings a fresh, modern approach to bookkeeping. At Simple Step, our mission is simple: to make accounting less intimidating and more empowering for the new generation of small business owners.

Every day, I feel incredibly blessed to do work that matters—with clients who inspire me, and a purpose that drives me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Running a small business is nothing like working in corporate. I learned that the hard way. Back in the corporate world, my days were filled with refining processes and telling a company’s story through the numbers. But becoming a business owner myself changed everything. Suddenly, I had to do it all—wear all the hats, work twice as long, stretch limited capital, and still show up every day with grit and heart.

I’ve developed a whole new level of respect for small business owners—not just for what they do, but for the strength it takes to keep going. As a naturally introverted person (something many in the accounting world can relate to), the biggest hurdle wasn’t the numbers—it was being seen. Marketing, sales, content creation, networking… it was all unfamiliar and incredibly uncomfortable. For eight long months, my business stayed stagnant because I was too shy to tell the world I even existed.
But that had to change. I held onto the scripture 2 Timothy 1:7, “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” With that truth in mind, I took one step at a time. I started attending networking events. I joined our local Chamber of Commerce. I even pushed myself to complete a Dale Carnegie course to face my fear of public speaking head-on. Slowly, I began to shift my mindset—and everything else followed.

Today, I’m finally allowing myself to be seen and heard—and it’s opening doors I never imagined. I’m having real, authentic conversations with other small business owners. I’ve taken my B.S., MBA, and corporate experience and built a brand that’s approachable, modern, and rooted in service. At Simple Step Bookkeeping, I’m not just your bookkeeper. I’m your partner. I want you to feel comfortable asking questions, confident in understanding your numbers, and empowered to make decisions that grow your business. I want us to enjoy the journey together—and for you to feel supported every step of the way.
Most of all, I’m thankful. I see God’s hand in every opportunity, every connection, and every lesson. I don’t take any of it for granted. I find joy in the small wins and true purpose in serving others with the gifts I’ve been given.

We’ve been impressed with Simple Step Bookkeeping, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Because at the end of the day:
If it doesn’t make dollars, it doesn’t make sense.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
We’re definitely anticipating some changes with AI. We can expect redundancies to be eliminated and more accuracy with AI, but I don’t expect the need for bookkeepers to go away entirely. With the efficiencies that come with AI, we can expect a shift from just reporting numbers to more advisory services. Bookkeepers will have to shift from the number cruncher to the storyteller and advisor.

We’re also anticipating the complexities with fraud to become more sophisticated. There will be a need for bookkeepers to become more vigilant preventing and detecting fraud and safeguarding company assets.

To stay competitive, bookkeepers will have to put in more effort to differentiate themselves. Branding, soft skills, pricing and technical skills will need to be balanced. The ideal bookkeeper of the future is now part analyst, part advisor and polished communicator.
