Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Ginn.
Hi Kate, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as the eldest of three daughters. During summers, I worked at a sailing camp in the Outer Banks, waited tables at waterfront restaurants, and generally just found ways to be on the coast whenever I could be. One summer, I even voluntarily slept on a good friend’s floor, and spent every second I could on the water and on friend’s boats. Inspired by the freedom and laid-back nature of coastal living, I took a leap and headed west to Santa Barbara for college at The University of California, Santa Barbara. Without knowing a single person in the entire state of California, I still shock myself with that decision, but can’t imagine not being here. I majored in Political Science and Writing, and began editing and writing for Glitter Magazine. Writing about celebrity weddings, the Met Gala, fashion and beauty tips, etc. really gave me that early 2000s rom-com moment. Just a few weeks after graduating, I accepted an offer at The Madison Melle Agency, a Los Angeles-based creative studio & lifestyle marketing firm. Working in both the business development and public relations divisions of the agency, I’ve been lucky enough to travel all over the U.S., and even internationally with the firm, which was always a dream of mine.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am not alone in saying that COVID disrupted my entire life, but having my 21st birthday in my childhood bedroom was definitely not the plan. In January of 2020, I landed an incredible summer internship working on the campaign team of a New York Committee. This, combined with my degree in public policy, felt like the ideal path to law school. While those plans changed, I can’t imagine things being any different than they are now. As someone who thrives on change and constant movement, sitting stagnant for over a year forced me to take a beat, which I’m definitely grateful for.

What were you like growing up?
As the oldest of three daughters, I definitely embodied stereotypical oldest-child traits. I was bold and never afraid to try new things, which occasionally got me into trouble (and still does!) Despite the occasional over-calculation, I loved being the oldest and still do to this day. I have incredible parents, who complement each other perfectly, and both encourage me to take my life into my own hands.
