Today we’d like to introduce you to The BeautyPreneur Jayme Lanai.
Hi Jayme, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Jayme Lanai, I am an esthetician and business owner with over ten years of experience in the beauty industry. My passion for the beauty industry began as a young girl, turned into a hobby during high school and became a career as an adult. I always knew that I loved to help people feel pretty and confident. I received my license in 2013, immediately after high school and decided to take my passion more seriously around 2016. I worked as an Esthetician in Ulta for a couple of years which allowed me to deep dive and learn about skin, makeup and the fast-paced beauty industry. After Ulta, I landed my dream job in sales and education for many years with a prestige skincare brand, Dermalogica. Which was a huge deal for me, in beauty school we used their products and I always dreamt it would be amazing to work for them one day. Working for Dermalogica for about five years permitted me the ability to soak up so much knowledge about skin and body health, products and ingredients and further validated my love for the skin. Beautē Lab was born in November of 2020, in the midst of the pandemic I decided to bet on myself and rent a studio to grow my business. While still working my day job I took clients before and after my shifts at my studio for about two years, Beautē Lab started to grow and I wanted to dedicate all of my time to continue to water my dream. Fast forward to today, I now have my own storefront that I just opened in October 2022 located in Walnut,Ca. I’m currently in my soft launch phase, but the growth from betting on myself has been undeniable. The journey has been filled with ups and downs but has been amazing nonetheless. The beauty industry is a fast-paced and ever-changing industry but also fun and rewarding.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not been smooth, running a business is hard. Some weeks are amazing and some weeks I’m sitting there like “okay, where are the clients?” Running a business is expensive, there is ALWAYS something to do, something to buy or replenish. The technology in the beauty industry is always changing so there’s always something to learn, and stay up to date with the fast changes. While running a business consistency is key! I’ve learned to “fail forward” and “fail fast” because nothing is ever perfect immediately, so learn from your mistakes and do it better next time around.
We’ve been impressed with Beautē Lab Skin & Body, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Beautē Lab represents being comfortable and confident in your own skin. I specialize in bringing the glow out of people and making them feel good about themself. I am an esthetician and wellness advocate that has a passion for skin, body and mind health. I am a firm believer of “you look good, you feel good.” I work with all skin types from acne-prone to mature skin, I have a passion for teaching people how to care for their skin and prioritizing skin health. What sets me apart most would be my background and education, I have been privileged to work with some of the best brands in the industry and I use all of the education they provide to better the experiences at Beautē Lab. What do you like and dislike about the city?
There is always people to meet and you never know who you may be talking to. One thing I’ve learned is who you know is so important, making connections and networking with people that you meet is everything. 90% of my clientele is word of mouth and I appreciate that so much. Advertising yourself and putting in that groundwork, passing out flyers and cards is so powerful, social media is great but the groundwork is essential for growth.
