Hidden Gems: Meet Gaby Alcala of Luminous Body Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gaby Alcala.

Hi Gaby, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in a family of ancestral medicinal practices, I learned early how touch can support both relief and regulation and I understood the important role that mindful presence plays in therapeutic work. I was educated in my hometown Oaxaca, where I learned from my elders and aunts who emphasized compassion, precision, and listening to the body’s signals. Today, I own a private medical massage practice in Boyle Heights that I developed over the past four years, blending evidence informed framework. My approach focuses on medical massage to support musculoskeletal function, modulate pain, and regulate the nervous system, all delivered with careful attention to consent, safety, and the body’s intrinsic wisdom.

In addition to my clinical work, my journey with Luminous Body Therapy reflects a broader commitment to healing that honors both the body and the spirit. As an Indigenous brown woman, I bring a holistic perspective that aligns traditional care with modern practice. I’ve always felt connected to practices that nurture balance, peace, and self-awareness approaches that go beyond the surface and honor energy, culture, and community care. Being the first Indigenous brown woman to establish this kind of practice in my community Boyle Heights is meaningful to me; it represents healing as a collective, culturally rooted experience and a step toward greater visibility and representation in the wellness world. Healing, I’ve learned, can take many forms, and sometimes it begins by creating the space you yourself needed but could not find.

My work remains grounded in mindful touch, safety, and autonomy. Each session begins with intention and breath, guided by the body’s signals and the client’s consent. I integrate clinical reasoning with compassionate presence, ensuring that every technique supports function, pain modulation, and nervous system regulation while honoring the person’s cultural background, lived experience, and spiritual well-being. I strive to blend the human, relational essence of care with evidence informed practice, so clients receive effective treatment that also feels truly healing at a heart level.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Gratefully, the practice has run smoothly for 4 years, but this year brought several hurdles. The Los Angeles fires and associated environmental stress, along with a shifting political climate, affected access and scheduling. Maintaining a trauma-informed, mindfulness centered approach under pressure required recalibrating boundaries and adapting treatment plans to evolving safety considerations, while honoring autonomy and consent.

One of my favorite childhood memories was wacthing my aunts gather when neighbors or visitors from far away turning our porch into a sancruaty of healing on weekends.
I helped when it was my turn, their hands moving with quiet confidence as stories about Chaneque (bad energy) and remedies shared between them and past from generations. It was there I learned that “Healing begins with a touch” and exchange of ancestral knowledge listening and care
