Today we’d like to introduce you to Emiko Rasmussen.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As I was growing up, I used to watch 90210 TV drama series in Japan. Back in 90s, we didn’t have a smartphone, no YouTube, no Instagram, no TikTok so the only idea or images that I have seen about the US are from this TV show. Brand hair, Blue eyes, beach lifestyle… I had an opportunity to be part of an exchange program and visited San Diego the very first time when I was 16.
I was in shocked because my host family was not what I expected….. They were an immigrant family from Thailand and Laos. I was not happy because I was not getting the “American experience” for the first week. Hearing the language that I have never heard of. Many of the students spoke Spanish at the high school that I attended… Then I had an a-ha- moment that this IS the American culture! Since then, I never looked back and determined to come back to the states to do a study abroad. Now I am married with my husband (who I met during the exchange program) and live in Temecula. This is the story of how I came to the US.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Oh no! English is my second language and I had a lot of self-doubts and lost my confidence. I felt so invisible while I was working at the corporate for a long time… then one day, my mentor asked me Emi, what makes it uniquely you? What are you good at?? This was a life change question for me. Since then, I was able to re-discover my voice and became a role model to other women at work. I took a big part in womxn in leadership and womxn empowerment! October 2019, I got laid off from the company that I was with for over 13 years. Covid hits! I said goodbye to a corporate America and resume updating… Decided to follow my passion and create a business that I have been wanted to do. Standing as a 6 figure business owner now!
