Dr. Paula B. Miller

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
With me having a heart attack in August 2021 from a stressful job lead me to think twice about my health and future. It’s unfortunate that many people face similar challenges in their lives, as stress is a common part of the human experience. It was encouraging that I had the support of my husband Clarence, during my recovery. I just never thought I would endure such an ordeal. As I thought more and more about this I began to wonder how many others have experience stress on the job, with their children, or other people’s problems. “Well, I could not have been the only one.” Stress on the job and a heart attack that lead me to thinking.

Stress can indeed manifest in various aspects of our lives, including work, family, and relationships. Many individuals face stress on the job due to demanding workloads, long hours, tight deadlines, and interpersonal conflicts. Balancing career and family responsibilities can also be a significant source of stress for many people. Additionally, personal relationships, financial difficulties, health issues, and other life events can contribute to stress levels.

Recognizing that stress affects nearly everyone, it’s essential to focus on stress management and well-being. Speaking on stress management can be a valuable way to share my experiences and provide support to others who may be going through similar challenges. By offering guidance, coping strategies, and promoting self-care practices, I can help individuals better navigate stressful situations and improve their overall well-being.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth ride. I faced many challenges while trying to hide the fact that I had a heart attack. It still puzzles me today because it seen so unreal. But, I quickly begin to navigate the road to recovery by Thanking my Heavenly Father and managing my stress. Some of the struggles along the way:

1. Overcoming fear and anxiety: After experiencing a heart attack or any significant health event, it’s natural to feel fear and anxiety about the possibility of it happening again.

2. Adjusting to new lifestyle habits: Adopting healthier lifestyle habits, such as modifying my diet, incorporating exercise, and managing stress.

3. Relieving myself from work-related stress: It was a difficult decision regarding my career, setting boundaries, and advocating for my well-being in the workplace.

4. Release toxic relationship: Letting go of certain people, friends and family that was not good for my well-being.

5. Support system: While having a supportive spouse, like my husband Clarence, made a significant difference, not everyone has a strong support system. Some individuals may struggle with a lack of understanding or support from family, friends, or coworkers, which can intensify the stress and feelings of isolation.

It’s important to remember that everyone’s journey is unique, and the specific struggles can vary. However, by acknowledging and understanding these challenges, I can better prepare myself and seek appropriate support to navigate through them. It’s also helpful to connect with support groups, counseling services, or other resources that specialize in post-heart attack recovery and stress management to receive guidance and additional coping strategies.
