Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Blessing.
Hi Devin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a doctor of physical therapy that has been practicing for 15 years. After receiving my DPT degree from Ithaca College in 2010, I started my career in NYC. In 2015, I moved to Los Angeles and joined Evolution Physical Therapy and Fitness. I was drawn to Evolution due to their model that emphasizes not just rehabilitation but also performance, wellness, injury prevention, and recovery. At the time we were just one location in Playa Vista and I served as the Clinic Director. As we started to expand, I had the opportunity to open our South Bay location in 2018 which is where I currently see patients. I specialize in working with runners and triathletes and have been ingrained in those communities for several years.
As our company continued to grow, I was named our Vice President of Operations and oversee all 10 of our locations in Los Angeles and Orange County. I still see patients but also get to work on growing the business and developing systems to improve both our patient and employee experience.
Outside of work I enjoy training for marathons and spending time with my wife and 2 beautiful daughters.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When COVID arrived in 2020, I had only been in my role as Vice President of Operations for a few months. As a first time executive this posed many challenges. In physical therapy school, you aren’t taught how to run a business so there was a lot of trial by fire. I certainly made mistakes along the way, but was fortunate to have a CEO in Mike Giunta who has a lot of trust in me. We worked through these challenges together. We took this time to refine a lot of our systems and I believe that made us stronger when COVID slowed down. We were proud of the fact that we did not lay off or furlough any employees. I think that also built a lot of grit in our company, most challenges that have come along since then seem minor compared to 2020.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Evolution Physical Therapy and Fitness aims to redefine physical therapy. We provide next level injury prevention, rehabilitation, performance, wellness, and recovery services. One of our top company values is community. To us, community starts within our facilities, with our coworkers, and with our clients. We pride ourselves with creating strong relationships, connecting with our people, and doing whatever it takes to help our clients achieve their goals. We extend this into the communities we are located as well. It is not uncommon to see someone from our team at a run club, a soccer club, a mom’s group, a farmer’s market, or any other number of community events. We aim to be a resource for our communities in all areas of wellness. We know that keeping people moving and healthy carries benefits that extend well beyond physical therapy.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Accountability and adaptability are two qualities that I feel are essential to the success we have had. Taking ownership of your mistakes and staying true to your word are so important to leading others, whether that is patients, clients, or other members of your team. And in the always changing world we live in, being adaptable is critical. We keep an open mind and are constantly trying to figure out ways to improve so that we can better serve our communities.
