Hidden Gems: Meet Denise Brady of In The Meantime Breathe Family Counseling Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Brady.

DENISE BRADY

Denise, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started off my career working in South Los Angeles at Exodus Recovery. While there, I strengthened my passion and understanding of community mental health. Little did I know, I would have many challenges I would face in my career, leading me to where I am today. I faced microaggressions, feeling like my integrity and self-worth were always being questioned. In my last position, I realized I did not want to continue pouring into a job that made me feel like I needed to water myself down to fit in. I decided I wanted to reclaim my time. Now being in private practice full time, I feel like I am walking in my purpose and pouring into my community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I experienced being the only black woman in my department many times. I felt at times, I was losing myself to fit in with the politics and climates of each company. For the longest time, I thought this would be my path moving forward. I would leave one agency thinking it would be better but soon would realize it was the same. I eventually realized If I wanted to be happy, I would need to create my own table instead of fighting for a seat at the corporate America table.

As you know, we’re big fans of In The Meantime Breathe Family Counseling Services, Inc. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I work hard to provide my clients with a safe space to process and work through things they’ve hidden away. I work with my clients on removing the masks they’ve been wearing for the world. The mask keeps you from reaching goals, attracting healthy relationships, keeping boundaries, and thriving.

Currently, I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy to assist my clients in reprocessing traumatic experiences and memories. With EMDR therapy, I can provide my clients with long-term healing not always offered with traditional talk therapy. I pride myself on building relationships with my clients and being authentic. I love being real with my clients and helping them see therapy can be an authentic experience they can enjoy and not be afraid of. I want your readers to know you can heal authentically. And it’s never too late to start healing.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The key to my success is being real. Showing that therapists are real people. Allowing for a safe space for people to come into therapy where they are. This is a no-judgment zone! I share my real experiences as a therapist and also my own healing journey. People enjoy real, authentic people who they can relate to and learn from.
