Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Bradshaw.
Hi Courtney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started off as a hairstylist and have been a cosmetologist for 20 years. My journey into product development began when my youngest daughter was struggling with eczema. None of the doctors seemed to have solutions that worked for her, so I decided to create my own product.
I love science, researching, and creating, so this process was incredibly fulfilling. The product helped her, which gave me the confidence to branch out and develop a full line. From there, I secured manufacturing, established distribution, and expanded my focus to teaching people how to live a healthy, well-balanced life — because when your body is nourished, it shows in your hair.
Today, I have a complete line of clean, high-quality hair care products, including shampoo with oil, leave-in treatments, and conditioners — and we’re still expanding. One thing I’m especially proud of is that we don’t gatekeep beauty tips or secrets; we share everything so that everyone can feel confident and empowered in their hair journey.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a smooth road — it’s been very bumpy, but also incredibly satisfying. Because this is such a passion of mine, it gives me the courage, strength, and determination to push through. Working for yourself while raising children and a family is extremely humbling, but it’s also rewarding because I get to help, empower, and inspire others.
I also love that I can create my own schedule and make time for my family, but it’s not easy — securing funding, expanding, building a team, learning, and navigating the business side of things comes with its challenges. Sometimes I have a team to support me, sometimes I don’t, it could be extremely stressful at times, so I’ve learned to give myself grace. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, considering all the obstacles along the way.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Pretty Strands has been established and available on the market for over 10 years, which speaks to the fact that we’ve stood the test of time. We’ve weathered COVID, economic challenges, and ever-changing trends because we’re not just a trendy, fly-in, fly-out product. This isn’t something I just slapped a label on — every product is made with love, with clean ingredients, and with genuine care for everyone using them.
Our products are salon-quality and something you can trust. We’re proud to continue serving our community and the collective, empowering people to care for their hair while promoting healthy, well-balanced living.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I haven’t worked with many formal mentors in my industry, but I’ve been blessed to have many elders in my life — people older than me, members of my community, church leaders, and even individuals from the mosque — who consistently pray for me, intercede, and pour wisdom into me.
It’s not always industry-specific advice, but the guidance I receive helps me navigate life, business, and personal growth. I’ve learned that mentorship doesn’t always come in the traditional sense — sometimes it’s the consistent support, perspective, and encouragement from those who’ve walked before you that shapes your path.
