Hidden Gems: Meet Cecilia Bettencourt of Simply Well Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cecilia Bettencourt.

Hi Cecilia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hey there! I’m Dr. Cece, a chiropractor here in Seal Beach. Growing up I was always in awe of the human body and how things worked. I knew from a very early age that I wanted to help people and as time went on, I knew I wanted to help people as holistically as possible. I didn’t necessarily come from a chiropractic family but I never really bought into the idea that my body was “broken” or not taking care of me. Growing up we were always encouraged to look at what happening to us as a sign of something more, which is often what I tell our practice members.

For as long as I could remember, I wanted to be a doctor and at first, that dream was a pediatrician until I had my own experience with chiropractic care. Like many of us, I threw my back out in volleyball practice in high school and could barely walk. This went on for a few days, and I knew even at that age if I went to my doctor I was going to get pain medication and that the problem wouldn’t really be fixed solved. Through word of mouth, I found a great chiropractor who set me up with a care plan and opened my eyes as to why this happened to me- especially at such a “young age”.

About a year later, I was offered a job there and the rest is history! I fell in love with the philosophy of chiropractic and the immense power for change I witness firsthand through something that was so simple but also so complex at the same time. Additionally, I had an older brother that suffered with brain tumors and with the more I learned, the more I realized how much he would of benefited in his quality of life. He is my “why” I choose to help families, as I wanted to give that opportunity to others.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Well, I’ve always welcomed a challenge but it has not been a smooth road. Shortly after chiropractic college, I moved here to Long Beach with my now husband, however I was born and raised in Reno, Nevada. I went from one culture shock to the next and started building my practice in 2017 while independent contracting at a local practice.

In 2019, I decided to open my own little practice ( all 360 sq ft) in Long Beach, and shortly after Covid hit. We were fortunate enough to care for people during that and help minimize the stress everyone was feeling! But as a new cash-only business there were some difficult and scary times.

Fast forward to 2021 and here we were expanding into a bigger office and serving more of our community. With every new growth there comes growing pains, but ultimately our community takes care of me as much as I take care of them. I am beyond fortunate and grateful to be a part of their health journey. I often joke that I get to play at “work” and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a family practice in Seal Beach that pride ourselves on the fact that we focus on chiropractic care that optimizes nervous system regulation, adaptation, and function. We care for a lot of littles and pregnant mamas, mainly because it is easier to raise healthy kids instead of fix ” broken” adults. We see adults too, but our goals are just a little different.

Our practice is filled with autoimmune cases, breech babies, ASD, ADHD, tongue and cheek ties, constipation and so much more! We often find that a lot of these “symptoms” that most experiences are from a dysregulated nervous system that eventually presents physically in our health.

Because we don’t really focus on pain management like other chiropractors, we do not accept insurance, which ultimately gives the freedom to full care for our practice members without the constraints that often accompany insurance policies, which is why we offer care plans.

How do you think about happiness?
Being able to witness people’s lives change and “miracles” is the best thing in the world. Everything we do is about connection and it’s just amazing to see people get connected again- with themselves, their family and even their purpose again, The stress that comes from a health crisis is heavy, both physically and emotionally. And it makes me beyond to happy to see people get their “spark” back.
