Hidden Gems: Meet Bernadette Capulong of BC Design Haus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bernadette Capulong.

Hi Bernadette, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My background in graphic design greatly informed my career in corporate packaging (Nestle, Mattel, P&G), where I learned a great deal and enjoyed a fruitful career for many years. In 2009, however, I left the corporate world behind and began a freelance career, partly out of necessity and partly out of a desire to understand what it took to be an entrepreneur. This experience gave me just the refreshing taste of creative freedom and professional autonomy I needed to get to work building something of my own. That’s how BC Design Haus was born.

Over the next 6 years, I worked hard to grow the agency and eventually incorporated it in 2015. Like with anything that experiences growth, BCDH has seen a significant evolution over the course of its lifespan. From humble beginnings—a niche design agency with less than five employees operating out of a co-working space in Pasadena—to the full-service branding and marketing agency it is today, our larger, fully-remote team hails from all over the country and brings their individual talents, dedication, spirit, and diverse perspectives to everything we do.

In a relatively short time, BCDH has developed a strong reputation for innovative, high-quality work, and we’ve expanded our reach from L.A. to clients across the country.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, like with any journey, there are always bumps along the way. Firstly, right around the time I incorporated the business, I also began the process of adopting my son. This was no easy feat, but it challenged me to grow in ways I didn’t necessarily expect. It’s also given me the ability to see how leadership and parenting can inform one another, which has been invaluable for me as I continue to grow in both of those areas.

Additionally, the pandemic happened just as we wrapped 2019—one of our most financially rewarding years to date. The pandemic not only challenged us to pivot in terms of the services we offered in order to stay competitive, adaptable, and relevant, it forced us into a remote working environment—something that was initially jarring but that we’ve decided to keep as we realized how well it works for our team.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
BC Design Haus is a full-service creative marketing and branding agency based in Los Angeles. Our capabilities include digital marketing, social media management, branding, marketing strategy & research, website development, packaging design, and print & video advertising.

What sets us apart from other agencies is our hands-on, people-centric, and data-driven approach, which we use to customize unique marketing strategies, elevate storytelling, and foster meaningful relationships between clients and the communities they serve. Our non-traditional team is small but mighty, agile, personable, and highly adaptable. It’s these qualities that we’re most proud of and that we believe make us stand out from larger agencies with more rigidity.

BCDH is known for its personal attention, innovation, timeliness, and competitive pricing. These traits continue to open doors in terms of the kind of work we get to pursue. We work with a range of clients, from tiny startups to established corporations and more.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Lastly, I’d like to share that BCDH’s team is largely female, and while this isn’t by design, I don’t find it to be a huge coincidence. As a woman and minority business owner myself, I find empowering other women creatively, professionally, and as a leader to be close to my heart and an opportunity I’m grateful to have.
