Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Malloy
Hi Michelle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been passionate about health, but my journey into acupuncture and Chinese Medicine began out of necessity. As a teenager and into my early 20s, I struggled with chronic allergies, sinus infections, and bronchitis. I went through rounds of antibiotics, steroids, immunotherapy, sinus and deviated septum surgery, and even had my tonsils removed, but nothing resolved my issues. Eventually, I was told by ENTs and immunologists that long-term steroid use was my best option. I knew there had to be a better way, so I took my health into my own hands.
I started exploring nutrition, alternative and Eastern Medicine in 2010 and quickly realized all the health benefits. I began getting acupuncture weekly, incorporating herbs and supplements like quercetin, and making dietary adjustments, such as eliminating dairy. I was amazed at how quickly my symptoms improved and my quality of life transformed. That experience sparked my passion for holistic health and Chinese Medicine. I thought, If this helps me so much, it can probably help others too. I wanted to be part of the change that empowers people to take control of their health.
So around the age of 30, I left my finance career and moved from Chicago to LA to pursue this calling. After four years of studying acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, becoming a Board-Certified Herbalist, Licensed Acupuncturist and practitioner of Chinese Medicine, I opened my own practice specializing in women’s health, fertility, digestion, and autoimmune diseases.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When I first started practicing, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to specialize in. I was waiting for that moment of inspiration, and it came to me when my first fertility patient walked through the door – immediately I knew that this was my purpose.
Helping women navigate the fertility journey—whether they’re trying to conceive naturally or undergoing treatments like IUI or IVF—brings me so much joy. It’s not always an easy road; the process can take time, and some patients face more challenges than others. But being there for them, supporting them through the ups and downs, and ultimately helping bring little ones into the world is the most rewarding work I can imagine.
When patients decide to work with me, I really make it my mission to help them. Whether they want to get pregnant or just sleep better, I want them to feel like I am their partner in health and we are a team working to achieve their goals.
As you know, we’re big fans of Michelle Malloy Acupuncture and Wellness. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is Michelle Malloy Acupuncture and Wellness in the Beverly Grove/West Hollywood area. I’m Board-Certified Herbalist, Licensed Acupuncturist and practitioner of Chinese Medicine, specializing in women’s health, fertility, digestion and autoimmune diseases.
Many of my patients come to me after feeling let down by Western Medicine—not because it’s inherently flawed, but because it often doesn’t address the root causes of their issues or provide holistic guidance. I blend functional medicine with traditional Chinese Medicine to help my patients listen to their bodies, balance hormones, reduce inflammation, and optimize their health naturally.
Women’s health is a deeply personal and often overlooked area of medicine. So many women come to me with symptoms that have been dismissed or ignored for years—things like irregular cycles, debilitating period pain, fatigue, migraines, or unexplained infertility. These symptoms are often signs of underlying imbalances, but they’re frequently brushed off as “normal” or “just part of being a woman.” That’s where I feel Chinese and Functional Medicine can really help fill the gaps.
For instance, many of my fertility patients arrive with little to no guidance on optimizing their health for conception. They’re often told to “just keep trying” or encouraged to jump straight into invasive treatments like IVF without first addressing potential root causes such as hormone imbalances, stress, low thyroid function, blood sugar dysregulation, or gut health.
I work closely with women to create personalized plans that include acupuncture, custom herbal formulas, supplementation, lifestyle changes and targeted testing to address these issues. and provide a more holistic approach.
I’ve found that a holistic approach combining acupuncture, herbal medicine, supplementation and lifestyle modifications can significantly help regulate cycles, reduce pain and inflammation, improve egg quality, ovulation and implantation rates and ultimately enhance fertility outcomes. I also work with many women [to manage and address] conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, and hormonal imbalances—challenges that can be incredibly frustrating to navigate alone.
I’m passionate about supporting women throughout their entire fertility journey, from preconception to postpartum, helping them feel empowered in their bodies every step of the way.
I view Eastern and Western Medicine as complementary, not competing. Western medicine excels in acute care, diagnostics, and advanced treatments like IVF, while Eastern medicine focuses on chronic conditions, restoring balance, and preventing illness. For example, in Chinese Medicine, a red tongue and rapid pulses may signal heat or inflammation before a diagnosable condition emerges, allowing early intervention with acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle changes.
To provide a complete picture of my patients’ health, I also incorporate Functional Medicine diagnostics like hormone testing, thyroid panels, and GI mapping. This integrative approach ensures personalized treatment plans that address both symptoms and root causes. It’s not about choosing one over the other—it’s about combining the best of both to help my patients thrive.
What were you like growing up?
I was a ballerina growing up, so I’ve always been disciplined and detail-oriented, but also a bit of a free spirit! My mom was a huge influence on me—she placed a strong emphasis on health and was very intentional about the food she served our family and was a lifelong gymgoer. We never had unhealthy food in the house, which definitely planted the seeds early on for my love of health and wellness. Her thoughtful/intentional approach to life has shaped who I am today, both personally and professionally.
