Exploring Life & Business with Yazmin Gutierrez of Sentinium Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yazmin Gutierrez

Hi Yazmin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age, I knew that design, creating, and entrepreneurship were my calling. I was always creating things out of scraps and imagining how they could be transformed. Seeing new spaces, experiencing new cultures, and traveling inspired me. My ultimate goal was always to start my own business, a vision I held from the very beginning. That passion guided me to pursue a Bachelor’s in Interior Design at SDSU, where I fully embraced the world of design. My focus was always on hospitality design, and I was fortunate to start my career in that exact field soon after graduation.

In those early roles, I gained hands-on experience, working closely on the architecture and interior design of projects. Over time, I had the chance to collaborate with some fantastic companies, each one helping me grow and expand my skills. As my portfolio and confidence grew, I felt ready to take the next step, which led me to launch Sentinium Design. Now, I’m grateful to continue doing what I love, bringing transformative, unique, and inspiring spaces to life all over the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey hasn’t been smooth—it’s been more of a rollercoaster of emotions, filled with highs and lows. In my previous roles, there was always that pressure to constantly prove myself, especially as a new and young designer. Gaining the experience I have today wasn’t easy, but it’s been absolutely worth it. I’ve had to fight for my worth, whether it was for fair compensation or the right title and position on a project. Those battles were tough, but they taught me to stand my ground and advocate for myself. Those experiences have shaped who I am today and made the successes all the more rewarding.

We’ve been impressed with Sentinium Design, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Sentinium Design, led by me, Yazmin Gutierrez, we are passionate about the history of spaces and enjoy developing designs that honor and enhance their unique contexts. We specialize in innovative hospitality and residential design and work on a wide range of projects, from hotels and restaurants to member clubs and residences.

Our approach is deeply research-based, and we love diving into the history of sites and historical buildings to inform our designs. Our goal is to create spaces that are not only visually stunning but also original and groundbreaking. We’re driven by our core principles—Cogitare (Think), Sentire (Feel), Naturae (Nature), and Semnium (Dream)—to ensure our designs are thought-provoking, emotionally engaging, nature-honoring, and truly inspiring.

We take pride in crafting tailored and impactful interiors that push the boundaries of design. At Sentinium Design, our commitment is to create spaces that inspire and captivate, offering unique and memorable experiences for every project.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that might surprise people is how much I value traditional craftsmanship. While my focus is often on innovative and progressive design, I’m deeply inspired by age-old techniques and historical design elements. I love blending these timeless methods with modern aesthetics in my projects. This connection to traditional craftsmanship adds a unique depth to my designs that might not be immediately obvious, but it truly enriches the spaces I create.
