Exploring Life & Business with Shannon Soller of Beauty Beyond

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Soller.

Hi Shannon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my career as a makeup artist which is how I put myself thru college in San Francisco. I continued working as a freelance artist when I moved to Los Angeles and I always loved helping educate and empower women to look and feel their best. I was the one doing everyone’s makeup at weddings and parties. After I graduated and spent ten years in the corporate world working in marketing, product development, licensing and sales for Adidas and a few other fashion brands. After having children my son suffered from severe allergies and I couldn’t find any products that worked on his skin-“clean or from the dermatologist.” It was then that I connected with my partner Simone and we dreamed up the concept for Beauty Beyond- a place where we could edit, educate and empower our clients. Help them by providing the highest level service and be a resource for all of their clean skincare, makeup and product needs.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Let me be clear. We have done everything ourselves. With zero investment. We have taught ourselves everything on the logistical side of starting and running a business. From setting up an LLC’s and resale license, building a website and social media. We have taught ourselves. And all of it has been a learning experience. Where our strengths are we thrive. The providing service, the product expertise, the vetting and knowledge of ingredients, networking, and overall passion in our concept. We have evolved a lot in the past seven years. But you can’t be an expert at everything. You have to learn to ask for help when you need. You have to learn to be patient and learn to communicate and listen. Running a business is like a marriage. Your partner is as important as your spouse sometimes!!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Beauty Beyond specializes in two main areas. We work with clients privately and go into their bathrooms and help them edit all of their products. Skincare, makeup, toiletries/etc. We give our clients permission to purge. Educate them on expiration dates, what items are essential and what can be tossed. We then make personalized recommendations based on each client’s specific needs, skin type, etc. and provide a skincare and makeup chart with samples and recommendations. Ours is a more refined approach to beauty. Less is more.

The second area of our business focuses on working with top dermatologists and plastics surgeons to provide pre and post-procedure after care for patients who have had laser treatments such as CO2’s and Neck Lifts. We support the practices in offering patients the education they need so that as they recover, they will ensure the products they use are clean, healthy and safe for them protecting the investment they have made.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in the small town of Davis. I was the middle child between two brothers. I spent my days doing whatever I could to stay busy and active. My parents never had to push me because I was self-motivated, independent and an outgoing kid. Involved in everything-student government, peer educator, volleyball, softball, basketball, debate team, clarinet. I mean just reading this, I and can’t get my own kids to do half of the stuff I did. That said looking back, I think I was trying to “be successful” so I could get out of the small town. I knew that my parents couldn’t afford to pay for college and I would have to get a scholarship and work and I’ve been taking care of myself and working since I was 15. They did the best they could and are wonderful parents and instilled an incredible work ethic and values that I still use today.
