Exploring Life & Business with Philesha Alise Stern of Boujee Curls

Today we’d like to introduce you to Philesha Alise Stern.

Philesha Alise Stern

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 2008, I decided to enroll in cosmetology school. I had no idea how it would change my life. I quickly realized that curly/natural hair was being overlooked in the curriculum & I wanted to open a salon dedicated to servicing naturally curly clients. After getting my license, I began working with some of the top stylists in the industry. This allowed me to network and within a few years land my dream job. Senior stylist for Devacurl, Culver City. There, I was trained and educated to become one of the few curly and textured hair specialists in LA!

In 2020, after being in a private salon space for 3 years, I opened my first stand-alone, full-service salon dedicated to curls!! I never really thought I would achieve this goal in my career, but I am incredibly blessed to have a solid clientele supporting my brand, and we’re still growing!!!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think any journey worth completing will have a smooth road. My business has encountered several setbacks over the years. Everything from racial vandalism, irreplaceable plumbing issues… to crippling rent increases & much more. I believe these setbacks are defining moments that either break you or make you stronger… & I’m pretty tough!

As you know, we’re big fans of Boujee Curls. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Boujee Curls salón is a curl-focused salon that specializes in cuts, color, and restoration treatments for those wearing their hair in its natural state. We offer bridal and special occasion styling as well as hair education!

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My husband has been my biggest supporter and cheerleader. He has been so encouraging and has taught me countless lessons in business. He has been my silent partner and teacher, and I wouldn’t be where I am without his help and guidance. To the CLIENTS!!! I’ve had some of my clients for over 10 years now, and it has been the honor of my life to make people feel beautiful and love their natural hair!
